Any other Deadheads on here??

I am a huge fan of Pearl Jam, but I am also a huge fan of the Grateful Dead. An obvious reason that I like both is due to their phenomenal live shows and the fact that you can acquire and trade their shows with relative ease. One thing that I have noticed though, is that most of my friends who like Pearl Jam despise the Dead, and vice versa.

I also like plenty of other music (Beck, Nine Inch Nails, Pink Floyd, Gangstarr, etc... to cover the spectrum) I guess you can say that I love all types of good music.

I was just wondering if there were any other fans of Pearl Jam that also love the Grateful Dead?
Whoa, chill bro... you know you can't raise your voice like that when the lion's here.

I'll always love PJ but I love the dead just a bit more. :D

Welcome to the board by the way. Yes there are a few deadheads around here.

I only have ''How Sweet It Is'' album with Garcia. Good stuff :D

Yep. Another deadhead here. I like Garcia's solo stuff as well, although the studio stuff isn't so hot with the exception of 'Garcia'. While some of the discs have individual standouts (Mission in the Rain, Cats Under the Stars), they aren't solid discs.

Mickey Harts solo efforts are very good too if you like percussion discs. Mystery Box is probably the best. His shows are pretty cool if you are lucky enough to catch one.

Just got done watching the Grateful Dead Movie. The One More Saturday Night that opens this disc is seriously mind blowing! When Bob screams near the end and that guy with the cast pumps his arms... WOW!! I think Pearl Jam should release a DVD like this. One that gives amazing live performances but also shows a behind the scenes look and incorporates fans as pseudo characters in the journey. Maybe they have, considering I only own Live at the Garden and Touring Band. I think there are other DVD's by them, but I could be wrong.

By the way... as far as Garcia goes: being a guitarist myself, I think the song "Arabia" might be one of the most inspiring guitar songs ever!

I agree about the studio stuff. Luckily there is a large surplus of soundboard recordings, plus the official live releases. That stuff is smoking hot.

The JGB was a great ticket in the late 80's. They were still playing smaller venues, while the Dead were filling the arenas. One of the best shows I ever saw was Jerry Garcia Band at the Wiltern in L.A., 1988, sat 3rd row. Bob Weir & Rob Wasserman opened. Jerry played a killer Dear Prudence & Tangled up in Blue that night.

Couple of years later, they were playing venues the same size as the Dead, and it didn't seem as special to go see them (not that it sounded any worse, just less intimate).

Check out Old & In The Way if you like the Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band disc. It's a bluegrass project he was involved with in the early 70's. Quite a few good quality boots out from that project too.

Hey, nice username Old & In the Way...

Got inspired to go search out this clip from Letterman. Nice interview of Jerry and Bob 20 years ago(!):

Yeah thanks, I can still enjoy that LP. Also the Dead "unplugged" LP that was packaged and titled two or three different times (names escape me). Had a lot of traditional old folk tunes and country stuff. There is an outdoor venue in Seattle (Memorial Stadium) where I was lucky enough to see some Dead shows and a Pearl Jam show. Cheers

Probably Reckoning, which was all acoustic from the '80 tour, or maybe Bears Choice which was part acoustic, part electric from the early 70's. Killer Smokestack Lightning on that disc.

Speaking of Bear (Owsley), here's some more interesting reading. The story behind the Dancing Bears:

I'd rather be in some dark hollow
Where the sun don't ever shine
Than to be home alone, knowing that you're gone
Would cause me to lose my mind

Ok, so they did not write it, but they play it real well.
Cause I'm broken when I'm lonesome
And I don't feel right when you're gone away

Which Bertha do you prefer- the ferocious, fast paced versions from 1971-72. Or the more jazzy, improvisational versions from 1976-77?

just wanted to register for the PJ-Deadheads club, love the dead, I grew up loving punk and hip-hop and despising the dead, but I learned the error of my ways; unfortunatly not in time to see them. Its hard to imagine a lover of rock and roll not finding something likable about those guys,

btw, I'm going to see Ratdog this summer, pales in comparison, but its the best I can do at this point.

'71 - '72 versions. But I tend not to listen much to the Keith/Donna years.

Anyone pick up the new GD cd "Live at the Cow Palace" (12/31/1976)? Even though my bootleg collection is extensive, somehow I manage to overlook this show throughout the years. Get it for the Playin', Wharf Rat, Samson, Help, and Dew.. as well as the fact that it is one of the nicest mixes I've ever heard in a dead boot. Bobby's guitar really shines and their playing is like a cross between the 1974 and 1977 styles.

Just starting listening to the Dead in the past few years. Although too young to have seen Jerry and the guys, I have followed Bob Weir and Ratdog around a bit (that is to say, when they opened for String Cheese).

Is anyone into some of Jerry's bluegrass material, such as Shady Grove or Pizza Tapes?

Check out the Old & In the Way disc I referenced above. Jerry played David Grisman (who I think is on the Shady Grove & Pizza Tapes discs too) along with some other great bluegrass musicians.

If you haven't checked out the movie Festival Express, its worth a watch. A tour documentary of the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, and The Band from a tour they did across Canada. Some great performances and interviews.

Finally, I got an email today that they are finally releasing Three from The Vault, which was the live series before the Dick's Picks series. This one is a '71 show from the Capital Theater in Port Chester, NY, and it looks good...
