Now allow me to contradict everything I just said. QotSA's pretty cool.*crushing shame inside* :(
Stevie Ray Vaughan
well...if you like cold war kids, then i would suggest delta spirit and we barbarians. though we barbarians is only selling their ep at their shows...i'm really bummed about that! but, you can check out delta spirit on itunes i think.
others to check out...tapes 'n tapes, annuals, elvis perkins in dearland, menomena, fields, the spinto band, clap your hands say yeah!...i could go on for days

I'd second this one. Challengers is one of the better albums of the year, and they are more in the mold of the bands you mentioned liking.
Wintersleep
Cuff the Duke
Wilco
The Tragically Hip
New Pornographers
The Weakerthans
Gomez
The Hold Steady
Matt Mays & El Torpedo
The Constantines
-Tom Waits
My Morning Jacket
Kings of Leon
He asked for Indie bands. Whilst some of them are pretty good, the 'genre' gets narrower every time I blink...
- the great Sir Leo Harrison
Many people say that Band of Horses sounds like a cross betwen MMJ & the shins. so i think you should give them a shot. Z would probalby be a good album to start with.
Iron & Wine
He has a bit of an indie folk flavor to him. New album this year was very good.
Built to Spill
Perfect from now on is the album to get either that of their LIVE album which is very good and will give you a broad idea of their sound.
..And You Will Know us by the Trail of the Dead
Don't be fooled by the name. They are not a metal band. Check out Source Tags & Codes. It is one of the best albums of this decade .
(good call on them indian summer)
go forth and enjoy the music
Charlotte 03
Asheville 04
Atlanta 12
Greenville 16, Columbia 16
Seattle 18
Nashville 22
Ohana Festival 24 x2
I was hooked on them after hearing "Another Morning Stoner"...
I'm with ya on the MMJ train too...just figured they were a household name by now...their local boys to me.
the most spectacular of the spectacular "indie" *ahem*.... bands
not unlike MMJ and BoH but a clear choice for some bohemian ears looking for some fresh sounds of layered guitars and smart lyrics.
Rogue Wave
Esther's here and she's sick?
hi Esther, now we are all going to be sick, thanks

there's nothing bizarre about music.

I think what the person is getting at is that rather than posting a genuine recomendation based on what bands the original poster listed, people just shout out whatever band is their personal favorite that dont sound remotely simular in sound or style to the shins, spoon, band of horses, or Cold War kids.
The best recommendations I've seen out the ones listed thus far are (based on what this person is looking for):
My Morning Jacket & Rogue Wave

Start with the second track.
matt mays
Sam Roberts band
My Morning Jacket and the Kings of Leon are amazing too (but I don't think of them as "indie").
edit: I like most of Built To Spill's stuff too, for the record.
So I guess three mainstream indie bands that are worth two shits

Oh my, they dropped the leash.
Morgan Freeman/Clint Eastwood 08' for President!
"Make our day"
i saw them Open for Brand New earlier this year ,and they were amazing. their album is one of my favorites of this year
" I Will Feel Alive as Long as I am Free"
"Are We Getting SomeThing Out Of this All Encompassing Trip? Makes Much More Sense To Live In The Present Tense"

It depends on what indie means: Josh created his own label and organizes the Desert Sessions every few years, which sounds pretty indie to me. Then again maybe that's "punk". Bah.
And yes, the genres get more specialized every year. How many subgroups of metal are there now? 10? 11?
