Has anyone else heard Thurston Moore's Trees Outside the Academy? I have really enjoyed it and I think it is worth a listen. I realize with the plethora of albums that have come out this fall it has probably been overlooked, but it is my favorite so far. I realize the name Sonic Youth turns some people off, but this album really doesn't have the "Sonic Youth" sound I think most people are associated with. It is softer with less feedback or wailing noises. I would definitely recommend it.

Nice is it just him or does he have others play instruments as well?

I've been wanting to check this out but just have not had a chance. I love sonic youth :) skrew the haters

He plays with other musicians. I think Steve Shelley plays drums on all the tracks but one or two. J. Mascis from Dinosaur Jr. plays on some tracks also. If you liked the tracks he wrote for Rather Ripped, you'll probably like this. He uses the layering guitar sound but with more of an emphasis on the acoustic guitar.

    Haha! Yep.

I've only listened to them as a band. Maybe it sounds a bit like Winner's Blues?
  • Don't forget the violin. That's a centerpiece of the acoustic arrangements on the records as well.
I really like this album. Very, very cool.
Using the word "methinks" in your message board posts doesn't make you look smart.

    Samara Lubelski on violin. Excellent.
  • Up to this point in the year this is my favorite album. The title track is amazing. Just 6 minutes of Thurston jammin like only he can. The acoustic numbers such as "The Shape Is In A Trance", "Silver>Blue" & "Never Day" are amazing. This album is twice what Rather Ripped was. It's just a complete album that you'll keep coming back to.
