Travis Warren will no longer be Blind Melons singer. This is very upsetting news seeing as it came less than a week before I'd get to see the band for the first time. I now am having a TRBL week and will need to drink for the remainder of it. They are looking for a replacement which is good news.

Chris Shinn was going to step in and finish out the tour, but the rest of the band decided that he didn't have enough time to learn all the songs.

So, they have scraped the tour and are now looking for a new singer (a la Judas Priest)...according to a Myspace bulletin they posted yesterday.

  • that kind of sucks. would of liked to see chris take over the vocals. I think they should just tour as 4 man group with brad smith on vocals, probably should of done that from the start..imo

    1. I liked Chris when he was in Unified Theory and wish it could have worked out.

    2. I liked Travis and I'm sad things couldn't be sorted out.

    3. I agree...carry on as a 4 piece...if someone's up for the task of tackling vocals.

  • Damn. This does suck. The new singer was no Shannon of course, but he had a very nice voice and fit with the band very well.

Personally, I wish they could tour under a different name. Shannon Hoon was Blind Melon to me.

    Useless Fact:

Shinn's dad owns the N.O. Hornets.
  • Good, now when they start touring again, hopefully I'll go see them... forgot about 'em for their beginning part of the tour.
If I could, think I would give in.

Damn I really wanted to see them. Honestly, if their original singer dies, then their new singer leaves the band, then I think they should just change their name. 3 singers is 1 too many.

Didn't know what TRBL meant for a second. Almost asked "

I don't know. seems like they already broke the taboo, so why not if they find somebody good? I saw them several times in the last year and they got better and better, and they started out pretty great. I wish them the best. There are too many shitty bands out there to worry about what a really good one calls itself...if it works for them I'm not going to worry about it. I'll check out what they do next.
  • I liked travis a lot as their singer. The new stuff is great and I think his voice worked well with old melon tunes. For the love of god why did this have to happen 5 days before i see them live for the first time??? Seriously WTF

Sounds like Travis was a prick; but that is only one side. Was going to see them in Clifton Park this weekend; glad I saw them in May.

So, no chance Chris Shinn will be the new singer? Honestly, I liked the Unified Theory record better than the new Blind Melon but only because I don't find Travis to be a great lyric writer. Great set of pipes though...

This is hardly bad news. Maybe this time they will find a singer who can write decent songs, not just one who can sing the old songs well. Travis's lyrics made the new songs un-listenable.

I agree that two or three songs had some cheesy lyrics that make songs hard to listen to like Father Time and For My Friends. But other songs like Make A Difference and Hypnotize are good lyrics. IDK if u've read the lyrics to all the songs. The main reason i was upset tho was because this saturday would have been the first time seeing them ever.

I agree with you on this....EVERY single song on the record was incredible when you only considered the music. And most of them were good lyrically, and some of them were great lyrically. I have thought about it and made a list:

    great:
    hypnotize
    make a difference
    cheetum street
    so high
    sometimes
    tumblin' down

    good:

last laugh (written from a shannon hoon letter)
    for my friends
    wishing well
    right set of eyes

    not good or even atrocious:

    father time
    down on the pharmacy

Every one of these songs has cool shit going on.
I just read an interview from 1994 with Robert Plant, and he talked a lot about Blind Melon. it ws very interesting. he said that he heard a lot of zep in them and talked about going out to all their u.k. shows. He said he thought they were the heirs to led zeppelin, not necessarily in the sound, but in the spirit. I have to agree with him....this band takes chances with the music. I'm a big PJ fan, but PJ does not take chances like melon does. It's very subtle, and it takes a few listens to pick up on........one of the best headphone bands ever....

Ok, first of all this does suck that he left the band. From what I've heard it does sound like a shitty reason to leave a band, but I dont know the full story so whatever.

Second, while yes some of the new songs had cheesy lyrics and yes Shannon was much better, Blind Melon has ALWAYS had some cheesy damn lyrics. C'mon "...all over a bowl of bitter beans." - WTF is that? and "..making rib cages in the coffee table" aren't exactly the best lyrics I've ever heard (dont get me wrong I love those lines too.)

I just hope the new guy is good, cause it was nice to have one of my fav bands back.

There isn't anything wrong with either lyrical example you just gave. That's good original writing and imagery, nothing cliche' about it.

The lyric is "making rib cages into coffee tables". Ed Gein, the subject of the song, was a serial killer who made furniture out of peoples body parts....twisted.

LOL! Needless to day she messaged on myspace the other day because she was very happy to hear of the split.

I thought it was kinda sad, I liked Travis, by no means did her EVER replace Shannon (you can’t really replace the irreplaceable) but he was good and I liked his voice.
I saw them a couple of times here in Florida and in Seattle earlier this year and they were such good shows.
But going by what Rogers said, it seems that they just didn’t geta long from the very beginning even though they tried to make it work.

I wish them the best of luck though finding a new singer.
