A few 7" vinyl pictures

I love the 7" vinyl single and have been an avid collector for years. The ITW vinyl release has certainly stirred up a lot of interest in vinyl on the board. There seems to be plenty of new collectors just discovering vinyl for the first time. Here's a few pictures of some recently purchased titles, none of these are rare and cost no more than £2 or £3 ($5). I'm a sucker for a coloured vinyl or a picture disc! I'll post some more pictures another day if anyones interested?

  • I could easily live without 7" vinyl. I go through phases of buying them when I see them, but in general I try to avoid it. They sit in a box and very rarely get played, unless I'm having a 7" night.

I have a lot of Sub Pop 7", as sometimes this is the only way to consume obscure music by obscure bands, and I really like having an evening listening through some stuff that I never hear anywhere else, but in general I don't do this as oftena s I would like to and I'm far more likely to stick on an LP.

In short I get annoyed with myself for getting excited about 7" I have picked up second hand that then sits in a box on a shelf.
  • To be honest I hardly ever play my singles, much prefer to put on an album. I just love the 7" medium!
  • Thats the thing - I find that I collect them for the sake of collecting them. I probably have 300 or something like that. So I've kind of said no to the whole thing. I still check through the P's when I find a new vinyl shop though :)

Can you recommend any good online vinyl stores? (outside of the usual supects). I get most of mine from record fairs in the UK, I also try to get over to Utrecht for the 3 day fair as often as I can.
  • I've been to the Utrecht one - I usually give my girlfriend my wallet and take in 150 euros. Whatever I take I can spend.

To be honest(watch me get flamed) ebay is my favourite. Especially for 7". I've never found a very convincing way to search through 1000's of 7" in real life and usually get bored pretty quick, plus the low weight for postage means that you buy stuff with virtual pocket money. It's my downfall basically:

3 quid all in to post to the UK. To get the same in a record fair or a record shop you're looking at browsing through loads of records. There's nothing I want enough to spend the time bothering, wheras there is in albums.

A very few record shops and fairs have 7" by record label, and that interests me a lot more. For that reason I really like 7" records. Coming accross a 3 quid sub pop/k records/pop llama/ single from 1996 or something from someone I've never heard of, I'll buy it and check it out. Thats fun, but the sea of A-Z singles in all the records shops that I know that say 1-euro each or 5 for 3 euros just says "we can't be arsed looking through these, but you can do it for us if you want"
  • You won't get any complaints about ebay from me. Any shops selling vinyl in Amsterdam?
  • There are some great vinyl shops in Amsterdam(about 8 really good ones or something) I can easily spend an entire day looking round them. The problem is that Amsterdam has a heavy throughput of international people, so bargains tend to get snapped up. To a certian extent, Glasgow, or somewhere a little more obscure is better for that.

I first started collecting vinyl when I was about 10 although I didn't know I was collecting, I would just pick up Led Zep, Who, and stones albums for 50p cos I was checking out the music and it was a lot cheaper than CD. Those days are long gone. The internet's great cos you can get things much easier, but now everyone knows the value of things. Everything in the vinyl shops in Amsterdam is priced correctly. There are very few albums worth listening to that cost less than 10 euros second hand.

I have a rough policy of buying albums which I think are classic on vinyl and checking out new albums for a while before I buy them on vinyl. I try not to pollute my vinyl collection with things i never play, but sometimes it's unavoidable. I have records I've bought at gigs which make good momentos but I don't neccessarily play that often.

I have pretty much given up on CD as a format. I have my iPod for music while on the move, and Vinyl for home listening. There's obviously a bit of that process that's illegal, and I'd like to limit that, but I spend a lot of money on new vinyl too, so I think I do my bit for the record companies. There's quite a few of the record labels are now giving you a CD or a download password for mp3 with new releases and I think this is a wonderful idea.

I think running a second vinyl shop would be a great job. There's a great skateboard shop in Amsterdam that has a little cellar where they only sell music they like:

I love that policy, cos I really couldn't be fucked punting old Barry manilow records and shit.
