That would exclude quite a few albums. The hits album isn't very expansive. It's simply a compilation of his most "popular" songs. It's actually a lot like Rearviewmirror...tons of stuff from the early years and nothing much afterward. Some would say that's a good thing but I think otherwise.
Music, lyrics, and lead guitar are by Neil. Pearl Jam are his backing band. Jack Irons is at his best. Many of the songs kick ass. Any Pearl Jam or Neil Young fan would be nuts not to have it.
His older ones I really like are Harvest and After The Gold Rush, both incredible albums.

Yup. They wanted to include I Got ID and Long Road too but I'm guessing that there was a legal/record label problem, hence it not being by "Neil Young & Pearl Jam".
Take it as part of your PJ collection.

See These Bones
As far as individual albums go, it's hard to go wrong with any of these:
Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere
After The Goldrush
On The Beach
Tonight's The Night
Zuma
American Stars n' Bars
Rust Never Sleeps
Ragged Glory
I'd like to know if anyone other than a Pearl Jam fan or an absolute Neil Young fanatic would praise Mirrorball. It think it's a rather lackluster album, and that's not a word I use often. I can't think of one song that stands out to me after owning it for a number of years.
On the plus side you can probably buy it used online for $0.50 plus shipping.
I'd recommend Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere or Harvest as a starting place instead.
honestly, his catalog is so large, i advise going with his last greatest hits album... and i would also pick up Mirrorball since PJ was the band for the album, not to mentuion it is a classic!
Mirrorball is sorely underrated and unkown to WAY too many PJ fans
Rust Never Sleeps
Harvest
