What does everybody think of Live? I like them, I really like their old stuff throwing copper, mental jewelery, secret samadhi and distance to here, the last 3 are a bit hard to get into.

I have seen them about 4 or 5 times, and they are really good live,

Wat do ya think?

i love this band. They used to be one of my favorites bands. But the last albums have dissapointed me.
I saw them twiwe back in 96-98. They were awesome! The singer is really charismatic.
Throwing copper is in my top ten albums. Secret Samadhi is my second live fav albums...

I'm a fan. Always loved their stuff. It has got a bit repetitive sounding to me but Throwing Copper is still an amazing album and I love a lot of their other stuff too. And they're fantastic in concert. :)
    NOPE!!!

I'm with the original poster. Throwing Copper is one of my all time favorite albums. The whole album was excellent. Which means that everything after wasn't as good. Secret Samahdi was good, if just a bit too in your face. There wasn't a whole lot of subtlety with Secret Samadhi. After that I became very disappointed with their studio albums. I've seen them three or four times, and I wasn't disappointed in any of their live shows. I wish they'd make an album that makes them relevant again.

I love them and they were great when I saw them perform live

they have changed here and there, but I love Ed's voice

Still remember seeing I alone for the first time with his long braid and going who the fuck are these guys
  • I love Live. They have been one of my favorite bands since I was 16. When it has been a while since I got any new music and I don't have a concert to build my excitement for, they are the band I listen to most. They are sort of my "go to" band. Plus, I think they are awesome in concert, but they stick to the hits a little too much. They need to break out rarities more often.

    As for the albums...

Mental Jewelry has some good songs, but I don't love it. "Beauty of Gray" is a good song.

Throwing Copper is a masterpiece. "Lightning Crashes" is simply one of the greatest songs ever. But, every song is good

Secret Samadhi is another masterpiece. It is one of those rare albums that gets stronger toward the end. Sure, some of the early songs are great (especially the opener, "Rattlesnake"), but the album ends on such a high note. "Turn My Head," "Freaks," "Merica" and "Gas Hed Goes West" are all excellent songs.

The Distance to Here is my #1 favorite album ever (by any band). I bought it the day it came out in 1999 and have probably listened to it over 1000 times. Even though it is one of many examples of Ed being a little too existential, "Run to the Water" is one of my favorite songs. There is something so sincere about that track. Though I love every song on the record, it is another one that really ends strong. The second half of the disc has "Feel The Quiet River Rage," "They Stood Up For Love," "We Walk in the Dream," and my wedding song "Dance With You,"---all of which are magical songs.

V is ok, I guess. "Simple Creed," "Like a Soldier," and "Overcome" are all good. I think the band was trying too hard to be something it isn't,

Birds of Pray is a decent recovery from the shakey V. The first half of the album features some good stuff like "Heaven," "Like I Do," and a song that I love but have never heard anyone else rave about---"She"

Songs From Black Mountain is decent. I think "Mystery" ranks among Live's best songs ever.

I have essentially grown up with Live, having listened to them for almost half my life. I understand how their music doesn't appeal to everyone, but it means a lot to me.

years ago...when they first came out...there was that song that said, 'her placenta (sp?) falls to the floor.' as it turns out, when we got there they wanted us to watch the video of the kid being born and the dad was taking the video from where his wife's head was and in the glass covering the picture that just happened to give a perfect shot of her 'womanhood'....well, let's just say i saw things long before i wanted to.

to this day...and my wife would vouch for this...within the first 2 notes of ANY 'live' song...i say, 'the woman's name + placenta.'
the daughter must be 10 -11 by now.

doesn't matter the song...anything from this band makes me think of a placenta (sp?)

I like them a lot. Saw them live and they were great! That was back in the 90's however. :)

  • Live is awesome live, I saw them back in August with Collective Soul and Counting Crows. Great band, and as it's been said before, Throwing Copper is one of the greatest albums of all time!!!

I used to like some of their songs from Throwing Copper, but...it just got too generic for me, and then little things started to annoy me like their name. lol ;)

actually just downloaded "I Alone", "Lightning Crashes" and "White, Discussion" today. good band. plus they're from Pennsylvania so i gotta represent.

MAN, i just listened to "White, Discussion" for the first time in about 10-11 years... that song is a monster!! wow, really impressed.
  • I am in the minority as I really liked "V", "Birds of Pray" and thought SFBM was solid. I'm a sucker for those big chorus build-ups

Live are an amazing band, way up there with Pearl Jam.I saw them many times live and Ed Kowalczyk is as charismatic and powerfull a frontman as Eddie Vedder I.M.O.
But they arent big enough in Britain,I believe they are huge in U.S but certainly in Scotland they headline small venues.I find most people have never heard of them.I saw them on the Distance to Here tour at the Barrowlands in 1999 the venue was half full and they were supported by a "new" band called Muse (where are they now!?)
Pillar of Davidson is one of the finest songs ever written.Bird of Prey was a bit dissapointing but they are back with force with Songs from Black Mountain.Everyone should check them out at least once.Typing their name into a search engine does cause confusion though!

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.
