Who Invented Yarling?

The vocal style made popular by Eddie Vedder, Layne Stayley and various other loosely identified "grunge" bands. I really have no idea of it's origins, I was wondering if anybody has any theories.
But then again, I can definately hear some definitive examples of yarling in Axl Rose, so maybe Eddie was subconsiously influenced in California and brought it up here to Seattle. Just a guess, any ideas?
