I've recently started listening to Opeth...I think they're amazing. I was originally put off because I thought they were just death metal, but they're really melodic.

I saw a live video of 'When' and I've been hooked ever since.

Anyone else hear like them? What's your favourite album?

It is. You should check out their other stuff as well, they're all good. My favourite at the moment is Still Life.

    Great, amazing band.

Ghost Reveries, BlackWater Park and Damnation are 3 masterpieces IMO.
The can go from the most gorgeous accoustic songs (harvest, windowpane, etc...) to some of the most rocking metal you'll ever hear (ghost of perdition, the grand conjuration, pretty much the whole BWP album).
They are very good friends of another awesome band called Porcupine Tree. Download "Arriving Somwhere But Not Here" from Procupine Tree... It's one of the greatest songs ever written and Mikael Akerfeldt has a contribution in one of guitar solos of the song.

Damnation is my favorite. Even if you don't like metal, this album is worth picking up

Definately, it's not metal at all. I don't see how anyone can not like that album...it's so melodic & catchy.

I like everything about Opeth except the vocalist. He keeps me from listening to them more than I would.
  • Are you kidding??

Mikael's got to be one of the most talented and dynamic vocalists out there...seriously, I have seen them live 3 times and I never failed to be astounded at his ability to switch between the 2 styles of vocals at a breath. INCREDIBLE talent.

As for their music in general...Ghost Reveries is the best progressive rock album I have heard since Tool's Lateralus.

I got into them from Deliverance/Damnation and checked out their older stuff...Still Life, Blackwater Park, Morningrise are all masterpieces...

I know, where he gets that voice from i'll never know, its unbelievable. I can understand why people would be put off by the death metal vocals though.

  • I'm not and never will be a fan of the death growl...but in some of these opeth songs I have to say it really does WORK for the song. the dynamic shift is fuckin mindblowing...
