Was thinking that despite his passion, Ed hasn't written a great anti-war song.
My top three are One, Civil War, For Whom the Bell Tolls.

Anyone else ???

will hoge has written some good war songs called bible vs. gun and america.
  • I really really disagree. I think Ed's been one of the most poignant, clever political songwriters in history. It's subtle most of the time (as is Ed's style in general) which is something that political writers have always lacked.

totally obvious, but anything by bob dylan (the times they are a changin, masters of war, it's alright ma (i'm only bleeding), with G-d on our side, knockin on heaven's door) , and a few rage against the machine songs (don't know them well enough to say which songs though)
and pj totally have some good anti-war songs, wws, marker, army reserve, and i don't feel like flipping through the rest of the albums, but no song comes to mind from them (riot act didn't have any SPECIFICALLY anti-war songs that i can think of)
No problem can be solved from the same consciousness that created it.

  • masters of war will always be my favorite.

i feel like ed has written a shitload of good war protest songs. i mean they're not all completely obvious as wws and such, but i love ones like insignificance and parachutes.

  • heres to the state of mississippi ( from storytellers) cant remember who ed said wrote it, but with all the changes i like it .. not really anti war more anti politicians, religion and the likes.. still good, and my fave is masters of war, and the opposite i am a patriot
  • Funny thing is that few of Dylan's songs were protest songs. A handful of his earlier stuff but that's basically it save for the occasional "Hurricane" every now and then.

Still he wrote some of the best for sure.

Yeah, come on all of you, big strong men,
Uncle Sam needs your help again.
He's got himself in a terrible jam
    Way down yonder in Vietnam
So put down your books and pick up a gun,
We're gonna have a whole lotta fun.

    And it's one, two, three,
What are we fighting for ?
    Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
    Next stop is Vietnam;
    And it's five, six, seven,
    Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why,
    Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

    Well, come on generals, let's move fast;
Your big chance has come at last.
Gotta go out and get those reds —
The only good commie is the one who's dead
And you know that peace can only be won
When we've blown 'em all to kingdom come.

    And it's one, two, three,
What are we fighting for ?
    Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
    Next stop is Vietnam;
    And it's five, six, seven,
    Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why
    Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

    Huh!

Well, come on Wall Street, don't move slow,
Why man, this is war au-go-go.
There's plenty good money to be made
By supplying the Army with the tools of the trade,
Just hope and pray that if they drop the bomb,
They drop it on the Viet Cong.

    And it's one, two, three,
What are we fighting for ?
    Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
    Next stop is Vietnam.
    And it's five, six, seven,
    Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why
    Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

Well, come on mothers throughout the land,
Pack your boys off to Vietnam.
    Come on fathers, don't hesitate,
Send 'em off before it's too late.
Be the first one on your block
To have your boy come home in a box.

    And it's one, two, three
What are we fighting for ?
    Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
    Next stop is Vietnam.
    And it's five, six, seven,
    Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why,
    Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

Would not "Ohio" by CSNY be considered a great anti-war song?
All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a thousand enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed.

Perhaps some Metal has some "pro war" Songs. Generally about wars long ago or fictitious fantasy wars. Bands like Amon Amarth talk about fights and wars in a positive Viking way :)

Then there was a song by Hank Williams Jr before the first gulf war i forget how it goes but the chorus was something like the Eagle and the Bear make a mighty fine pair.

Jackel made a song about attacking aghganistan when we invaded somethign about kicking their ass on their own sand or something like that.

Those are the only ones that come to mind immediatly.

i think you're talking about the hemingway book that the song is based on/inspired by.

one of my favorite songs about war is "the war" by lucero. i don't really think of it completely as anti-war, it's more just a war story. if you haven't heard this band before, you should check them out, they're not a political band, just a good rock band.
