Kanye Is The Man
Just listened to the new album and the man proves once again that he's cocky for a reason. Instead of releasing an album we'd all expect he releases something different and "fresh". And just a year after Graduation, which I think was his best yet. You may hate the guy but he has has 10 Grammys for a reason (including 3 Rap Albums of the Year).

I'm pretty damned excited for this album. Graduation is mind-blowingly good and is the album that single-handedly got me into hip hop. College Dropout is great as well. I'm not as huge on Late Registration... it's good but has some misses and is his least consistent album. But I'll be there on Tuesday to pick this new album up for sure.

It is definitely overloaded with skits, and they lack the humor of College Dropout's skits. But for me, it's the songs. The middle part of the album just has too many same-y epic slow raps. The album does have some of his best overall songs, but I feel as an album it just doesn't seem to gel like his others. That said, it's still a great album. It only suffers when you compare it to other Kanye albums imo... compare it to anything else and it kicks ass!
I suggest reading Greg Kot's great review from the Chicago Tribune...it includes this line:
"The dozen tracks aren’t designed to be celebratory pop hits (in the mode of just about everything West has done in the past), but postcards from the shadowy fringe of the dancefloor, after everyone has gone home."
And for everyone that's going to come into this thread and rag on Kanye: Fuck you close-minded douches.
Lil Wayne is better than Pearl Jam.

It's like saying "yeah ok, I suck at this but you'll buy it anyway because it's me so I'll just polish it up with computers".

i'm sure i'll get around to hearing this eventually. the mention of it having less party tracks definitely interests me more, though i'm wondering if i can stand hearing all that auto-tune for that long. will give it a fair shake though when the time comes. i'll admit his 'style' of music really isn't my thing, but i recognized his talents years ago and that he worked his way up the ladder legitimately.
the guy's been through some bad shit, especially recently, but he just needs to let the music do the talking. no need to proclaim himself as something that really means JACK SHIT in the end. once he start trying to be the best or most remembered of whatever bullshit level of POP STARDOM (NOT MUSICIAN) he thinks he's achieving, he'll lose sight of the only thing that matters - music and expression. quit over-compensating, Kanye, and just do your thing. we hear you loud and clear already. you'll get your due when the time comes.
also, GRAMMIES DON'T MEAN SHIT.

As Jimmy Kimmel said "Elvis died on the toilet with a jelly doughnut in his mouth, so you might want to rethink that."
Either way, I think Kanye has a very skewed perspective. He is a fine artist and a prima donna. He is no Hendrix, Beattles, Elvis.

how so? those artists were the top artists around in their time...the same is correct for Kanye no?
No.
Kanye is top in his niche, but has far from universal appeal and acclaim. He's a poppy artist who is very clever, but certainly isn't revolutionary, and hasn't left (and won't) an indelible mark on music history. He is as close to a parody as he can be as a serious artist.
you are severely underestimating him...
i'm not sure of any other artist to sell out 3 shows at MSG after only their third album...i would bring up more examples of him being bigger than you think but it's late...

I don't think he really believes that stuff. Rappers are supposed to have egos, that makes them big sells. Everytime Kanye says something like that people respond to it, and thats exactly what he wants. And then when he releases an album if you love him you go out and get it anyway, and (sometimes) if you hate him you're still curious as to what the album sounds like.

Britney Spears had a huge impact a few years ago, and the amazing ability to sell albums and sell out shows. Based on your perspective, would you then posit that Britney is the new Janis Joplin, Aretha Franklin, etc...?
And you're not leaving here without me, I don't wanna be without

Britney was a hired gun that had no hand in the production of her own music. Say what you will about Kanye, the songs are his. The production is his. The lyrics are his. Each album is different, changing his sound, evolving. I liken his run of albums so far to Pearl Jam's first three... neither artist was content to keep playing the same tired formula. They both pushed themselves, changing with each release, maintaining the difficult combo of critical respect and popular appeal for several years and albums.
He's not some flash in the pan, as so many disposable rap stars are. He's in for the long haul.
Yes. I was referring to his song with the words 'you lose'.
You're not the only one there. A lot of people would agree that as far as simple technique, he's not much of a rapper. He had to fight that a lot coming up. But he's not the only person to compile a pretty incredible body of work with limited vocal talents.
