I got a new one!! ...although I'm wondering now if was itunes rather than the ipod itself...

I reckon so too as I tried the new ipod on the pc initially and had all the same trouble.

I've loaded itunes onto the work lap top (ssh...) and have the music files on a separate hard drive and it works fine now. Old pc won't properly reinstall itunes now though...
