I saw the show last night at the Electric Factory, and I must say.. I think its the last time I see them (unless they open for PJ or are playing a festival im already at).

I don't like the new direction they are moving in.. at all.

I felt like I was at an Nsync concert with the crowd that was around me, and the songs were exact album replicas. Come on guys, Take a chance! Jam out!

I am a big fan of these guys, but I kind of agree with the posters comments to some extent. I think that KOL is a very tight and talented band with a ton of potential. However, you can almost predict song lengths to the second. Almost as if they are afraid to venture far from their practice sessions. Also, the never change up the set list. I saw them on back to back night last year and the second night, despite great music, didn't get me pumped up as much. Mainly because I knew which song was going to played and in which order. Last, for having four albums and a few great b-sides (which they never play) they never play for more than around an hour and a half. Jam out a bit, play a two hour set, and change up the setlist and I will be very pleased.

Despite that I still really enjoy their music and won't miss an opportunity to see them live. Just not back to back nights.

  • i don't know what band you saw, because i saw kings of leon on halloween and they were fucking incredible. no, they didn't jam out a ton, but a lot of bands don't.

oh yeah, and seeing the beautiful women of chicago in the sluttiest outfits they could find shaking their bodies all over the venue didn't hurt the show ;) so if that's what an 'nsync' crowd is, i'll take that over the beer gut frat reject sausage fest that is your average pearl jam crowd any day!

I have to agree with you. I was at the show last night and too felt like it was alittle poppy. They are a great band but I think they must start rocking out like the 2 and 3 album. These people talking how much they rock out in concert. In the back of my mind I was thinking damn thank god for pj, these people have no clue what rocking out is. My girl had fun though so that made me happy.

By any chance were you wearing a stickman shirt? I was rockin the green disease shirt.

No.. an "Nsync" crowd is a giant group of 16 - 18 year olds with all their friends, on their cell phones, just there because its the place to be, not because they are into the band. Maybe, at most, they think the singer is "HOT!! OMgZ LOOK AT hIM!!?!". These people made me want to leave half way through the show.

I love looking at good looking girls as much as the next guy, but most of the good looking girls at the show last night had to be under 18. Which does nothing for me.

I think they've definately made an almost calculated move into the mainstream. At the end of the day, I like Only By The Night so it doesn't bother me too much. But they've come a long way from their first two albums.

ah, must have been a different crowd at the show i saw. there was some jailbait, but mostly it was college age or young professional. i went to a concert for the band 'brand new' once and it was like you describe... the crowd DID almost ruin that show. sorry you got a bum night to see them!

Totally, 100% agree. Pearl Jam crowds are really fucking annoying after a while.

I saw them the night before and it was really fucking amazing. Definitely the best KOL I've been to so far. I love the new songs live, they just sound great, ESPECIALLY Cold Desert. That brought tears to my eyes when they did it. The best part is that middle section right before it gets kinda heavy at the end, absolutely beautiful.

And the crowd was SO into it, I loved it. I was only about 3-4 "rows" (if you were to picture a general admission crowd in terms of rows) back from the stage. The crowd was really hoppin' and sang every word, even the old stuff. It was much better than being at a Pearl Jam concert, not in terms of the performance (though it did get close) but in terms of the crowd. No one was overly drunk, everyone was friendly. There were young people and older people and people in between and everyone just had a great time. People at Pearl Jam shows get WAY too drunk, it's fucking annoying after a while. It wasnt a totally sober crowd, I smelled lots of pot. They were just more enjoyable than Pearl Jam crowds.

Don't second guess it. It sounds like they just had an off night in Philly because the only people knocking their live show are the ones at that show. There's a whole other thread here praising their live prowess. Give them a shot. If it sucks, you can leave!

  • i was at both shows this weekend, and i dont know what everyone is talking about, They were Fucking AWESOME !!!!! sure they didnt jam out, but who cares they are a solid band and they sounded amazing, at least they dont fuck up their songs or forget lyrics. the crowd was great both nights, sure there were some young people there but who Cares!!! the first night i was on the Rail on matt's side and the crowd was going insane behind me, on night two i sat on the balcony right under Jared, the set list was pretty similar except for a few songs, but no matter what they always put on a great fucking show!!!

They're not a jam band. Get over it.

And I like the new songs, they're all way better live.

Just go on back to you MMJ shows and we'll enjoy the sights and sounds of KOL.

    1. They're as rock as the next band... not everyone plays live like pearl jam does.

    2. Even if they weren't, what's so bad about a good band playing good songs well?

    3. if you dislike KoL so much, why did you go to the show? Their new album is excellent. Who cares if they play it well and don't get drunk and fall off the stage like Ed does?

They're an indie/garage rock band. Would you go see the Strokes and be like "Wtf, they didn't jam?" KOL rocks pretty damn hard, and I could honestly not care less if they jammed or not. It would be cool but I love KOL exactly the way they are.

And don't act like you're unleashing some great revelation on us. "Guess what guys, KOL doesn't jam!" We know what they're like, and we know they're gonna play songs from their new album, that's what the tour is for.

This is a good thread because I was thinking the other day I used to get Kings of leon and the black keys mixed up... not anymore thats for sure. This is why I won't see them for atleast the only by the night tour.

I saw them in Boston a couple weeks ago, and thought they were great. I didn't go into the show expecting a 2.5 hour set, so I wasn't disappointed.
They could certainly add some length to their shows by adding 4-5 more songs. They have the catalog to do it.

My only beef with them is playing the exact setlist on consecutive nights. They did it in Boston, and I think it's pretty lame. I know they played True Love Way, Arizona, and California Waiting in Philly. Great for them to mix it up a bit. They should have done that in Boston.

I agree with the OP. This tour was the 4th time I've seen them. Their performances have been going downhill IMO.

When he says "Jam Out" I don't think he's necessarily meaning Pearl Jam extended songs per say, but actual effort in the performance. They stand there, don't interact with the crowd.

The Philly show sounded like the Portland show. And whoever said that KOL rocked more than PJ at Lolla needs some meds.

  • The only Y&YM song they played when I saw them in Dallas a few weeks ago was "Molly's Chambers". They still play a lot of songs from Aha Shake Heartbreak which is my favorite KoL album. I thought they were great in concert. No, they don't improvise much, but I am fine with that. We get spoiled by how much PJ varies their setlists as well. I would say that most bands play more of a standardized setlist.

I will say that if you aren't a huge fan of the direction of the last two records, that you will not love them live since that is predominately what they play live. I enjoy all of their albums, even though I prefer the first two, so I was very impressed with their live show.

I saw them last week in Toronto--I also saw them in Toronto on the BOTT tour and loved it--and while it was a good show this time, it certainly didn't have as much impact as the first time. Same setlist they've played all tour, predictable performances...And the scene the original poster described as far as teenaged girls losing their shit over how hot the band were and spending the whole show on their cell phones--it was 100% like that at the Toronto show and it ruined it for me. BTW, anybody else notice them playing a lot of the rocking songs really slowly? Molly's Chambers, Four Kicks, Black Thumbnail, Slow Night, So Long--all reeeeeeally noticeably slow.

Oh, and what the fuck charging $50 for T-shirts?!?!
  • I saw them at the Warfield in San Fran, and aside from Eddie coming on stage for a song, they pretty much just called it in. The energy seemed lacking, and there was no improv whatsoever. Give me Idlewild (or Supergrass) any day.

I'll pass on seeing them next time they come around. I got to see them 5 or so times while they were touring for Aha and BOTT. I've seen them play the same songs over and over, plus the new record is kinda weak.

Good time for me to start passing on their shows as their popularity and ticket prices increase.
