Just one, suggest an album( not by Pearl Jam) we should all get and why
Lets think a little out of the box here, and avoid obvious shit like Master of Puppets of Wish you Were here etc. Stuff the average fan here may not have due to age or unsubstantiated biases.
Mine is Train: "Train" Their first album. This is before the POP fluff shit they churn out now to get pussy and commercials.
Meet Virginia is the most well known song on the album, but it may very well be the worst song on the album. Pat sings his ass of here, and I doubt they will ever top this album. It is easily their "ten" without blowing up as huge as PJ, and not gorwing like PJ (I think they have regressed since this record). This album from top to bottom is phenominal, and has a great consistency to it. The songs flow pretty seemlessly in terms of the mood it establishes. It is more of a feel like you are a bit down on your luck. I would recommend this album to anyone. It is nothing like their others, and really has none of the pop radio friendly shit of their last 2. It has the feel of Superunknown on Vallium (a Lot less heavy and much more acoustic, but same somber tone). If anything give it a soundclip listen it is worth a try. Every musician on this album is an equally important part of this record and though Pat's vocals are fantastic they'd be nothing without the rest of the band putting it all together.
1. Meet Virginia solid song, a fun listen, and fun to sing along to
2. I Am - nice haronica and great vocals
3. If You Leave nice up-tempo track with cool guitar, Pat is at his best here
4. Homesick- nice song, fits the title perfectly
5. Free- THE BEST Train song IMHO rocks hard, great everything. This is what hooked me on Train long ago.
6. Blind- guitar and his voice, light drums and bass, all fits soo perfectly
7. Eggplant- Can't stand the lyrics, but it fits the album musically. maybe the only thing close to a dog, but really far from it.
8. Idaho- Sweet song
9. Days- Can't hear this song too many times
10. Rat- solid song
11. Swaying - nice song, fits albums feel very well
12. Train - hidden track, nice jam song, Pat is strong again
13. Heavy - hidden track 2, more typical hidden track acoustic

just a brilliant record to listen to when dealing with death or loss. reminds me of a more brooding version of R.E.M.'s "Automatic for the People" with electronica tinges. doesn't sound like a lot of fun but i'm so glad i have this one in my collection
great thread btw
Anybody got a band they'd like to share with big guitars, expressive singing, and heavy amp distortion?
Tonic-Head on Straight
spin doctors- their first album kicks ass
buckcherry- s/t, they're so good at what they do
and you will know us by the trail of dead- source codes and tags, amazing shit
Big Business - many probably know them as being 'in' the Melvins for the most recent record. Their own records are very Melvin-ish if maybe a little more straight forward.
just for the title alone.
i bought this album blind on the recommendation of some one else. it grabbed me first listen and i now have 4 of their albums and the drones have leapt to the top of my must-see-live-everytime-they're-in-town list. they have quiet songs, loud songs, songs that tell a story, rocking songs, ones full of reflection and songs with great titles such as another rousing chorus you idiots!!!! the music is guitar driven. and it's not the cleanest sound you'll ever hear.
take a good look
this could be the day
hold my hand
lie beside me
i just need to say
I think fans of the early 90's rock scene would appreciate this album, it's got all the hooks of early PJ, Screaming Trees, AIC etc, but adds soul and funk to give it a totally fresh feel.
Key songs: Crime Scene Pt. 1, Double Day, Going To Town, Summer's Kiss, Honkey's Ladder, Faded.
you mean to tell me dave grohl isn't the foo drummer?

New Order's Benrard Sumner & The Smith's Johnny Marr.

1,Vs 2,Vitalogy 3,No Code 4,Yield 5,Ten 6,Backspacer, 7Pearl Jam 8,Binaural 9,Riot Act.
Okay so it is very well known. Biggest Selling Jazz album all time, but so many people espcially on this board sometimes seem to shut jazz out. i know there are quite a few rabid jazz fans here but i'd bet they are far outnumbered by those who completly dismiss the genre.
This is an amazingly beautiful album. That flows from the opening note to the last note. Miles Davis & John Coltrane at their best. two of Jazz's best ever, and the rest of the supporting players are all great musicians too.
You can put this music on in the background to study, you can put this on outside on your deck on a nice spring afternoon, you can put this on late at night to make babies (
So please for the love of all that is good try this album. Go to your local library and check it out. If they have cd's i bet it is there. That is how i got my first copy.
I think Miles Davis was one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century.
In my opinion his work was better then the beatles, dylan, hendrix, and anyone else in rock.
So although it is well known i feel it is a darkhorse album to many here (not all i know some of you love jazz and love miles)

A_C:
I've had a sound clip of your signature on my website for years:
http://www.dreamt.org/spinfrog/DLROTH.mp3
Typo Man: "Thanks kidz, but remembir, stay in skool!"
Buckethead - "Electric Tears" (beautiful album)
Pond - Self-titled and their 2nd album "The Practice Of Joy Before Death" (the best Seattle-era band you've never heard of)
Joe Satriani - Self-titled (so bluesy, soooooooo good, entirely listenable from beginning to end, even if you are not a solo-guitar fan)
Miles Davis - "In A Silent Way" (best rainy day jazz album you will ever hear)
Sunny Day Real Estate - "Diary" (the best emo album ever, period)
Poster Children - "Tool Of The Man" (pop-punk's finest, and my favorite album of theirs)
The Kinks - "The Kinks are the Village Green Preservation Society" (nothing needs to be said about this album.)
Tommy Emmanuel - "Only" (fingerpicking acoustic guitar, and in my opinion the greatest guitarist in the world. Just a great disc)
Primal Scream - "Screamadelica" (experimental rock/techno/dub before that style of music was even around)
Incubus - "S.c.i.e.n.c.e." (If all you know is their radio stuff, this album will blow your mind)
And to the person who was looking for loud guitars with expressive singing:
Far - "Tin Cans With Strings To You"
Typo Man: "Thanks kidz, but remembir, stay in skool!"
Buckethead - Colma.
Its an amazing album was was written for his mother at a time when she was ill. The songs are all really mellow and engrossing.
:eek:jk what is even more alarming is when you read down the reviews and someone gives it 5 out of 5:eek::eek::eek:
Minus the Bear - "They make beer commercials like this" 6 song ep from great seattle band. Every song is great on this one, and is a good starting point.
Choke - "SlowFade or How I learned to Question infinity" Last record from a very under-rated band. For the person wanting expressive singing, with loud guitars and such, check this out.(www.smallmanrecords.com"
The Cardigans - "super extra gravity" Should have put them back on the North America map, but I don't think there's room for good new music here anymore.

Go to amazon, check it out, buy it, love it... I know you will
Don't it make you smile?
"Whale Music shifts between rock, Brian Wilson-inspired pop, spoken word, country and even metal — sometimes within one song. The album is sometimes serious, sometimes silly, but never pretentious and never novelty. Due to these varying influences, it's impossible to pin down Whale Music stylistically. It's also impossible not to love it. There isn't a person I've played it for, regardless of their musical tastes, who hasn't been compelled by the album. It's got consistently beautiful arrangements, incredible playing, lush harmonies, poignant and moving lyrics, original sonic experimentations, many moments of pure fun, and of course, at the root of it all, brilliant songwriting."
.....this is my favorite album by the greatest band ever to come out of Canada (even better than Arcade Fire, Broken Social Scene, the New Pornographers, Stars, the Dears, Godspeed you black emperor, Sloan, Metric, DFA 1979, the Hip etc etc etc.....WOW we Canadians sure kick ass
.....the Rheostatics played their last show EVER a couple weeks back - so when you seek out this band.....fall in LOVE with them....buy ALL their albums.....you are SOL when it comes to seeing them live (which is too bad as they are an incredible live band)
.....a few years back this album was picked as the 4th best album EVER to come out of Canada (behind Sloan - Twice Removed, Neil Young - Harvest and Joni Mitchell - Blue)
.....do yourself (and me
and they all eat rainbows and pooh butterflies!
Rush?
Neil Young?
Typo Man: "Thanks kidz, but remembir, stay in skool!"
Rush - can't stand 'em....horrible!!!!!!
Neil Young - not a band
and they all eat rainbows and pooh butterflies!
But in the scheme of things they are far 'greater' than any of the bands you mentioned.
Typo Man: "Thanks kidz, but remembir, stay in skool!"
Take my hand, my child of love
Come step inside my tears
Swim the magic ocean,
I've been crying all these years
one of my personal favorites.
not in my opinion they ain't
and they all eat rainbows and pooh butterflies!
sloan cracked the top 3? who made tht list? i cannot believe they are unknown stateside...
Great call. I'm surprised they are not more popular.
I actually prefere Highly Refined Pirates, but they make beer commercials is awesome too.

Archors of Loaf- Icky Mettle
If you liked pavement they are similar and i love this album. Some good ole Chapel Hill Rock
