I ma curious for those of you who lived it with me, what do you think the best "80's" song there is? I am thinking more of the lines of top 40, so don't throw out some band we never heard. The 80's gets a bad rep, there was a lot of outstanding music (songs you just love listening to, or singing to). I don't think I could pick one as the best

my nominees (there are tons more):
Flock of Seagulls- I Ran
Men at Work- Land Down Under
Toto- Africa or Rosanna
Pat Benetar- Love is a Battlefield
Falco- Rock Me amadeus
Tear For Fears- Shout or Everybody wants to rule the world
The Knack- My Sharona
The Fixx- one thing leads to another
Men Without Hats- Safety Dance
MJ- beat it or Billie Jean
MAdonna- Like A Virgin
Duran Duran- Hungry like the wolf or Rio
Ah Ha- Take on Me
Simple Minds- Don't you forget about me
Wang Chung- Dance Hall Days or Wang Chung
Soft Cell- Tainted Love
Echo ANd The Bunnyman- Lips LIke sugar
INXS- devil inside or what you need, Never Tear Us Apart , Need you tonight
Chris Issac- Wicked Game
Eurythimcs- Sweet Dreams
Robert Palmer Addicted To Love or simply irresistable
Frankie Goes To Hollywood Relax -
Dexy's Midnight Runners Come On Eileen
Madness Our House -
Thompson Twins Hold Me Now or Doctor Doctor
cutting crew- I just died in your arms tonight
Cyndi Lauper- Girls just want to have fun
Foreigner I Want To Know What Love Is
Berlin -take my breath away
Hall and Oates- Maneater
Night Ranger- sister Christian
Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer
Run DMC- Mary Mary or walk this way
Fine Young Cannibals- She dirves me crazy
zztop- legs
Dire straits- money is for nothing or walk of life
Prince- half of purple rain

forgot U2, Guns and Roses, the scorpions, Ratt, crowded House , the Police and REM.... add thier stuff too

  • I vote for INXS , most notably "Never Tear Us Apart" and a hell of a lot of U2 and R.E.M.

As a side note, there are a lot of songs from the 1980's that I now associate with the video game "Grand Theft Auto--Vice City" though remember those songs from when they were out, they are now forever linked with a video game I wasted hours of my life playing (mainly Flock Of Seagulls "I Ran," Night Ranger "Sister Christian," Nena "99 Luftbalons," Yes "Owner of a Lonely Heart," and Wang Chung "Dance Hall Days")

From your list, I think 'Everybody wants to rule the world' is the best. I'd also say U2 'With or Without you/Running to stand Still'. The Police 'Every breath you take'. 'Spirit in the sky' by whoever sang that one. Culture Club 'karma kameleon' :D Guns n' Roses Sweet Child o' mine. John Lennon 'Woman'. Julian Lennon 'Too late For Goodbyes'. Aerosmith 'Angel'. Madonna 'Cherish/Express yourself :D. I feel silly listing some of these songs, but I think they're good 80's songs. But that's about all I can come up with.

I agree with a lot of the ones already listed. I'll add a few though that just scream 80's.

Dream Academy- Life in a Northern Town
    Bananarama- Cruel Summer
Howard Jones-No One Is To Blame

Of this list, my vote would go to Pat Benatar. Love her. Also love Tears for Fears though, and Echo and the Bunnymen. :)

I'm not sure I'd call much of that as outstanding music, but a lot of it was fun - on your list probably I'd pick Tainted Love, Wicked Game, or Sweet Dreams. I love Dire Straits, but techically Sultans of Swing is a 70's album - came out in 78 I believe.

My favourite song out of the 80s is probably Jane Says by Jane's Addiction.
“Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It’s hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It’s round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you’ve got about a hundred years here. There’s only one rule that I know of, babies — ‘God damn it, you’ve got to be kind.’” - Kurt Vonnegut

Why don't you just ask me what my favorite Pearl Jam song is? These type of questions are so difficult. At this second, I'd say my favorite song from the 80's is Bad by U2. I heard it today and remembered how unbelievably good it is, especially when I hear it live. But I also just realized a song today that summarizes the 80's, a song that captures it's essence: "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" by Tears for Fears. I don't know why but when I hear that song I get all wrapped up in the nostalgia of my youth like no other. Plus, the song so fits the 80's. And it happens to be very good.
