I think a band like Godsmack is a fuckin joke, as bad as nickelback, and they should never touch a zeppelin song, don't want to here it

It's bad. The zep version has so much more power even with the heavier guitar Godsmack brings to it.

  • I just read this thread and had to listen to it... Found it on Youtube, and I have to say, I was expecting A LOT worse. I thought it was decent... The pre-chorus was pretty weak and lacked fullness with the heavy guitars, I thought. The rest of it was not half bad. The way I see it, anyone who covers Zep are going to pale in comparison, and I can't really hate anyone for covering a band like Zepelin-- just like the rest of us, the members of Godsmack probably all rank LZ in their top 10 favorite bands ever, and love playing their (LZ's) music.

I heard this on a crappy one-speaker radio at my noisy work place. From that I was somewhat impressed be the accuracy of it and couldn't tell who it was. Towards the end of the song I remembered hearing something about Godsmack doing a Zep cover. Then I could kinda tell it was that wanker Sully singing. I started punching things. Partly because Godsmack was covering Zeppelin and partly because it I was mad that they sounded ok doing it. I'll have to hear it clearer to make final judgment. Maybe I'll just try to avoid hearing it again.
The only Zep cover that I think was done well was STP's version of Dancing Days. They changed the vibe and stayed classy. I think I actually prefer it to the original.

Why can't FRAUDsmack play some actual original music?
Beavis: All my friends are brown and red? What does that mean?
Butthead: It means that his friends are like turds and that they like suck.
Beavis: Heh heh. Oh yeah. Yeah! Get those spoons out of my face before I shove them up your butt!
    Butthead: Huh huh.

wtf are u talking about? they have like.. oh, i dunno... 5 cds worth of original music
  • for me being an enormous aic fan go ahead and thrash me, but i think godsmack is a very quality band. saw them live and they were real tight. although much of their music isn't necassarily so original, it is not the lame radio rock/pop crap like nickleback, or radio metal like trapt. There actually is a lot of talent in this band. their latest album is much more diverse. their is harmonica heard and stuff. live sully also hopped on the drum kit and he was reaaally good. i was surprised. and like i said, although lots of their music sounds like it can be AIC [especially their acoustic stuff], by no means is it lame or talentless. they are a good band. i'm not a huge fan of them or even listen a lot, but i think they are good and get too much crap. but thats me. i haven't heard this cover yet, i'm sure its pretty good. i never like when bands do covers of bands like that and release them on the radio though..i will give you guys that. i do think that is a little pointless.

I'm going to go against the grain here and say that it's a solid cover. No, it's not Zeppelin, but it's not horrible either. Godsmack had some decent songs back in the day. I saw them open for Metallica in 2004 and they put on a pretty solid show too. I'm definitely not going to throw them in with Nickelback...
I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me.

  • I also think this is pretty solid. Good for them.

  • yeah, i like the cover. they're not the most original band in the world, but when you hear one of their tunes, you know it's them, and they do what they do very well... they put on a great live show too... shannon's one of the best drummers around.

  • Okay - obviously it has nothing on the led zep version, but I would kill to be in a band that could make such a good go of a Led Zep cover. Like them or hate them, they've made a good stab at the impossible.

I dig it. Godsmack is fun music to me and most of it is easy and fun to play on guitar too. Nice thick sound. You can knock them all you want but there are way worse bands out there than Godsmack.

I agree. Why all the hate towards Godsmack? Because they like and are heavily influenced by AIC? Because EDDIE VEDDER probably made a veiled reference to them (or bands like them) in the song 4/20?

There are worse bands to be influenced by than AIC, incidently. And who cares. It's not like they are trying to hide it; they are named after a freaking AIC song, after all.

I saw GS live opening for MetallicA in 2004, and I left being more impressed with them than MetallicA - which was a huge surprise.
Do you remember Rock & Roll Radio?

I don't have a problem with Godsmack as a band. I actually think some of their songs really kick ass, especially off their first album. I was really surprised to see someone lump them in with Nickelback. They would blow Nickelback off the stage.

One reason I was so disappointed with the cover is because I like Godsmack, much like Dirtyfrank38 described ie I don't listen to it very much but when it's on the radio I dig it. I think the best covers are when bands try to do something new with the song. Their cover was too much note for note like the original and, biggest surprise to me, lacked the balls of the original.

My vote for best Zep cover: "Battle of Evermore" by the Lovemongers on "Singles". Really well done.

  • I would think any band covering Zep would go for an unheralded song - something that could be improved or taken in a different direction. GTBT is not the best choice.

I'm talking about the fact that they would never even be a band if it weren't for Alice in Chains. Just in case you didn't know, AIC has (had) the same sun logo, have a song named "Godsmack" and also Sully's vocals clearly copy Layne's.

my main problem with Godsmack is, yes they are as bad as Nickelback, any band that writes the same exact song over and over again doesn't deserve any credibility. I saw them live, (I only went to see Rob Zombie, my friend is a HUGE Godsmack fan), and it sounded like a 100 minute song, minus voo doo. The first album was good, but everything after sounds EXACTLY the same, face it they are falling off, they don't sell records like they used to, so they think covering a classic zepp song is gonna bring them back into the light!
