It was probably one day in the early '90s when some employee in R&D came up with the idea of "seven strangers picked to live in a loft".
MTV was all downhill from there.

I was going to say the same thing, Real World my ass.
'We're learning songs for baby Jesus' birthday. His mum and dad were Merry and Joseph. He had a bed made of clay and the three kings bought him Gold, Frankenstein and Merv as presents.'
The other problem is that last year they relaunch MTV2 with the idea that it will be a music channel, but it has been re-airing a bunch of crap for some time now.
I don't want to be hostile. I don't want to be dismal. But I don't want to rot in an apathetic existance either.
MTV went wrong when they started playing more hours of "shows" than music videos, What do you think?
When I read the title of the thread, I immediately thought of the exact same reason that you've posted. MTV=music television (right?). They should change the station name to RTV, for "reality television".
You can just as easily say it started in the 80's with the success of the VMA's, or with Remote Control, or Spring Break, or the handful of comedy shows they had..........granted, they had very few shows like this relative to the mid-90's through now, but I'm betting that as much as we all say we want nothing but music videos, the reality is that most people weren't tuning in for that and they had to make adjustments to keep the network going strong (making money).
MTV2 is a perfect case in point...it was designed as a narrow-band channel that didn't need to reach an overwhelming number of viewers to succeed. It was born out of all the idealic cries for a return to "music programming." It delivered. Nobody watched. Changes needed to be made.
Besides, who wants to watch the crappy videos they actually DO play now anwyay?
for all of us, yes MTV went wrong when shows like the Real World started taking over the channel
however, from their perspective, it was where they went right...the amount of money they have made from these new shows is crazy and mind boggling
Sadly, that is true.
Unless they were willing to run a station which played all the old stuff right through from the beginning again (of which there are two chances, slim and none!) I'll never have any remote inclination to look at MTV.
Lost cause...
mtv went wrong when mainstream music went to shit. i'd say post grunge era. i liked it in the early to mid 90's when bands like pearl jam, nirvana, soundgarden, pumpkins, stp, rem, radiohead, oasis, guns n roses, and aerosmith were getting heavy rotation. also the early 90's ganster rap was pretty solid as well...and the beastie boys. the videos were at least good back then.
it was in 1997 when they shifted their market to appeal to the tween market, because they are the audience that are the easiest to be manipulated by advertising and being told what is 'cool'.
Definitely started in the late 90's, and it only gets worse every year. Combine mostly crap mainstream songs(2nd wave post grunge like Creed, boy bands, etc) with lame non-music shows = eMpTyV
