After hearing so much about these guys on this board, I decided I should check them out finally. Liking what I hear on youtube, etc...

What is a good album to start with? I was liking what I heard from their newest one, and also Ágætis Byrjun, but I wanted your recommendations before I go out and pick one of these up.

Thanks everyone! I've discovered a ton of good music through the people on this board. :)

  • I had a similar thread on here a while back, and common consent seemed to be "( )" or Takk. I got both and was blown away. I think I might like ( ) better, but both are amazing, and either is great to start with.

( ) was my first and the one I usually recommend to others.
So are we strangers now? Like rock and roll and the radio?
  • I always say that "( )" is too out there for a beginner into Sigur Rós... "Takk..." is probably their more accessible one that doesn't have all songs being over 6 1/2 mins long. It always depends on what type of music you listen to. It takes more of a weening process, at least, that's how it was for me.
If I could, think I would give in.
  • The first album i heard was ( ) and it got me into the band

I agree. Glosoli and Hoppipolla are probably two of the most accessible songs in all of Sigur Ros' albums. Takk definitely seems like a good idea to begin with.

I second the notion of Takk being the starter. Then AB, (), newest.

  • I asked this same question earlier this year. I was told to start with Takk. I did, and I'm now a huge fan. I think () is my favorite album, but I started with Takk.

Coming from someone whos favorite band of all time is Sigur Ros.

    Start with Takk
Agaetis Bryjun is my favorite album of theirs...listen to it second
    Then get ()
    Then the new one
Then Hvarf-Heim/Von-The remade Hafsol on Hvarf is one of their best songs ever. The new Von is great as well. The album Von is not really essential but give it a listen. It has 3 great songs but the best song on Von (Hafsol) is 100x better on Hvarf.
  • I would go for ()..... it's their best album....

I would concur w/this. Takk is a great album to start out with because it has a taste of the band's range. () is a haunting album that at times I find very sad, but I think it's their best work. The new album is the 3rd I'd pick up then AB 4th. Don't buy Von unless you need to collect everything, it's not like the other albums.
