Death-metal screaming

I too hate the screaming. if it fits the song (some of MJK's screams are stunning) then its ok but I wish they woudldnt TRADE screaming for vocals."I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"0

actually Strapping Young Lad is a pretty fantastic band at ozzfest.
But if what is played at ozzfest is your idea of what metal is like nowadays I can see why you hate it so, and also you aren't really looking at very much of the metal scene.printf("shiver in eternal darkness\n");0 -

I totally agree man I saw them live!!!! "Morningrise" is my favourite Opeth disk, how about you?"Feel it rising, yeah next stop falling!"

For me it is a coin flip between Morningrise and Blackwater Park.
They're one of my favorite bands to see live. And Mikael is funny as hell with his banter between songs."I'll use the magic word - let's just shut the fuck up, please." EV, 04/13/080 -

If that was a shout out to me, I was just using those bands as examples of how metal and singing go great together, so every metal band doesn't HAVE to growl... To me growling sounds the same from every metal band (or very close to it) and the riffs aren't very interesting these days (I really miss the 80s solos, if they're still around I don't know about them). So living in the past works for me because I think the music is better then. And I actually like a Lamb of God riff until the guy starts singing, so there is hope.0 -
I guess my point was that Maiden and Metallica are not representative of how metal bands are. I personally don't think metallica's vocals are that great, I'll take Death or Morbid Angel's vocals over his any day. Or the guy from Finntroll.
The guy from Ensiferum's vocals have always bugged me.printf("shiver in eternal darkness\n");0 -

I would go as far to say they are probably the roots of metal - along with Slayer, and Megadeath. Most bands were influenced by at least Metallica I think. It all goes back to one or more of those four I think. Might be wrong. I'm just more mad at how all these metal acts don't have unique qualities that I can see/hear (and I hate growling). And Metallica's vocals and lyrics used to be amazing in my opinion, now, not so much. Death metal has potential I think, but it doesn't seem anyone is striving for originalilty anymore. Gotta growl, gotta drop the tuning (preferably Drop D down a step).

That whole cookie monster growling vocal style is just comical at this point. The Man has a branch office in each of our brains, his corporate emblem is a white albatross, each local rep has a cover known as the Ego, and their mission in this world is Bad Shit.0

no originality?? have you heard cryptopsy or what Enslaved's been doing lately (my guess is no, because you don't like growling or screaming and that is pretty much part and parcel with death metal).
as for metallica being the roots of metal? The roots of metal go waaaay farther back, ie Deep Purple's Machine Head and the like. BUt I hate discussing the history of metal because it makes people want to say things like "Led Zeppelin was metal because they had an influence on it!"
or Opeth! Blackwater Park is one of the best albums of the last little while. Granted Ghost Reveries ahrsh sucked, but man they are greatprintf("shiver in eternal darkness\n");0 -

Yes you're right about Metallica, I give them too much credit sometimes 'cause I've got a hard on for 'emAnd no on Cryptopsy and Enslaved - haven't heard them. I'm basing statememnts on stuff I've heard, which they could all be the same band in my opinion. I may have to look into more songs because I'm not educated enough about it to be making statements like I have.

Now that I think about it, really I've only heard metal, unless bands like Lamb of God are death metal (which I assume aren't). Byproduct is one I actually liked a little (trying to ignore the growl). I honestly don't know the names of others I've heard.0 -
Lamb of God aren't really Death Metal from what I hear people say, but I've never listened to them personally. From the bands lumped in with them, I'd venture taht they aren't really death metalprintf("shiver in eternal darkness\n");0

I may be missing some good music if Death Metal is really different. But I have to get over the whole 'hate for growling' bit first which won't come easily. Though I did lighten up to Billy Corgan's voice pretty fast...0 -

Hey, thanks for giving Byproduct a listen!!
and on a another note, Deliverance is also one of Opeths top albums (I dont know about the best, but pretty damn close) and not to mention the album that went along with that (kinda like the "other side" to Deliverance) called Damnation, which was more mellow acoustical songs, its not heavy, but dammit I love that album!!0 -
So somehow my blackwater park song (i bought the cd put it in my computer and put it on itunes and it has been messed up since day one... the cd plays fine though) is messed up on my itunes and won't play.
It is probably my favorite song on that album. Can anyone hook me up with just that song on You send it so i can put it on my itunes and listen to it in my car with my ipod?
I would appreciate it
Also I love Mastodon and High on Fire and i'm looking for bands with a similar style. Any suggestions?
