Borrowing CD's from the library

Anyone else do this? My local library has a bunch of CD's that you can take out for three weeks... of course, I usually burn them and keep them for longer than that :D (relax, I buy it if I really like it). Anyway it's really a great way to discover new music for free while still getting the benefits of an actual CD. They have a ton of artists, but a lot of the times they have a bunch of lesser known CD's from artists instead of the more popular ones. I kinda like it that way though. Since it's free, I just pick out an album from a band that I might think is interesting or I heard about on the board here or something. Then I make sure to not read any reviews and just listen to it with an open mind. This results in a lot of bad starting places for being introduced to a band (like Reveal by REM or Take Them On, On Your Own by BRMC), but I enjoy the feeling that I may like it and I may hate it.

Anyway, libraries are cool. :D

I rent albums from my school and public library all the time now, saves me having to illegally download something that I am interested in checking out

The biggest problem I've come across is the damage on some of the CD's... it can be absolutely brutal and can make the CD unplayable. I'm kind of afraid to tell them though because they might think that I did it.

Today I picked up The Velvet Underground & Nico, BRMC's self titled album (which wasn't there last time so I actually heard Take Them On first), Demolition by Ryan Adams (first time I've listened to him), Silver and Gold by Neil Young (too scratched to play though), and Magical Mystery Tour by you-know-who. Good stuff there.

Just be up front with them about the cd damage. I've always done that and never been blamed. I rented a few that were beat up bad too. I'm sure they know the material is going to get beat up after years and years of kids renting them out. Happens at any rental places mostly at video stores. I got sooooo many beat up movies /video games, when I worked at video store in high school.

Hell yes I borrow CD's from the library. It's exposed me to lots of artists that I never would have discovered before like The Replacements, Manic Street Preachers, Notorious B.I.G., Frank Zappa, M.I.A., Sonic Youth, Springsteen's pre-Born in the USA stuff, etc.

Most of the time when I check out CD's they aren't scratched or skip. If one does, I'll take it to the desk when I return it.

I love it when they have multi-CD compilations, I listen and just burn the best stuff onto 2 CD's. But if there's an album that I fall in love with, I just buy it at the store.

  • I have never thought of that, what a great idea. i am going to have to check out my local libary and see if they loan out CD's.
    thanks for that DOSW
  • it was about 17 years ago that i took out the clash's london calling from the library and it changed my life forever. i always used to take cds out from the library but then my stupid library changed the lending time from 1 week to 3 days, which made it impractical for me to go.

ive been borrowing cds from my local libraries since i was 15 or 16 (im now 23), and i continue to do it to this day. as has been stated before by others, it is the perfect way to get into music you wouldnt normally hear (or purchase...because lets face it, there is no way on earth i would be able to afford ALL the music cds ive ever wanted in my life!), and a great way to expand your musical tastes into other genres and things.

some of my mates think its a bit of a daggy thing to borrow cds from the library, but i dont care.

heck, its the main reason i filled my 30GB ipod so quickly!

man, that reminds me.....i need a bigger ipod...and fast! :)

    Public Libraries:

    Not just for books anymore!

I've been doing this for a few years now. Check out movies every once in a while, also. Love to be exposed to new bands without the price tag risk.

Yeah I used to do that all the time when I was younger.

Very good way of "testing" music to see if you will like it before buying it or other CD's from the same artist.

Also used to rent the video's too. I love libraries too! :D

  • Yep. Safer than downloading from Pullwire, or whatever.
  • i work in libraries

its freakin sweet, i get first dibs and dont have to pay either!!! Plus, when the stock gets chucked out, guess who rescues some of it? ;)

i like to check out something i would not normally buy,,,

    its alot of free fun!

but i did that b4 i worked there.

just tell staff about the damage, its never really front line staff's problem anyway.

I put all the PJ cds in the displays...heh heh heh.

I also got a bit High Fidelity on this guy who wanted to take out linkin park and good charlotte...told him he must be mistaken and swapped the cds for jeff buckley's grace and nirvana in utero. No charge though. I tend not to charge the people who choose cool cds, its like an incentive. Senior managment piss so much money away i dont feel guilty about it.

There was also the time i put all the jamie cuntam cds at the back with notes in to warn people how bad that 20 something album really was...hahahahahahahahhahahaha...

Libraries rock. this is one of the few perks of the job. Also swapping Bridget Jones' Diary video for softcore porn (dared to) was quite amusing.

you get a lot of time on your hands...
