you were suppose to pick that up months ago ;)
seriously...do it. i like alligator, though all of their cds are great.

i was seriously impressed when i saw them a couple months back...wasn't expecting so much passion, thought it'd be just a down tempo sad fest (not sure why). love 'em!

yeah, i keep hesitating becos i really don't care for a lot of the groups they get compared to... joy division and sufjan stevens and whatnot. but if i see one of their albums used i'll grab it.

ps. since i missed them at alolla, i've got tickets to the cold war kids at a small club here.

you mention cold war kids as i'm listening to them right now :D
you're going to love them...they're amazing!! do you know who's opening for them? if it's we barbarians...then i'm really jealous!
i missed them at lolla too...waiting for the super secret suprise guest at the kids stage. oh well...i got to sit in the shade for a bit at least :)

The National is great, great albums and great live. As you said, it's hard to expect them to play with much intensity live considering their musical style(especially on Boxer), but they are up there rocking out the entire time, very entertaining show.

don't go off those comparisons - i love the national and don't agree. The national can be melancholy, but they have melody...if that makes sense. joy division is good, but makes we want to develop a drug problem and head to my basement for the next 20 years.

and yes, Mr. November live is amazing. so much intensity
Those undecided,........ Needn't have faith to be free
And those misguided, There was a plan for them to be
Now you got both sides Claiming killing in Gods name
But God is nowhere,..... To be found, conveniently

    What goes on?

i previewed some of their stuff off amazon the other day and think it's more my gf's style than mine. i'm not a very melancholy guy. i like my music to be fun and aggressive. maybe 4 years ago when i was sad and melancholy it would've worked for me :)

they've got some pep to their sound though. anthemic energy. it's why i like the editors but not interpol. maybe the lyrics are depressing, but i never really listen to lyrics anyway. they're moody, but exciting. i prefer that to super mellow plodding. i like the arcade fire and alice in chains too. don't like interpol, or coldplay. sufjan stevens bores me... all moody piano with inane vocals. but i like bright eyes... depressing as hell but the music is dynamic and dramatic.

I've been loving Boxer for the last few months, though I didn't really get it at first. It took a few listens before I started to really feel the music. It's now easily my favorite album of the year (so far). I need to get Alligator, but I keep putting it off!

Definitely check out the link Todd76 mentioned. The 2007 White Session would be a good introduction to Boxer if you can't make up your mind to buy or not to buy.

then maybe try "boxer", their latest cd?! it's not as down tempo imo. i would definitely suggest seeing the national live...it changed my whole perspective on their music. i began listening to it differently. i think i've said it in another thread, but their live performance offered so many layers upon layers of sound that just build until the singer just explodes with emotion (in a good way). mr. november was ridiculously fantastic live!

but...not everyone likes every band. hope you change your mind about cold war kids :)

  • If anyone wants to hear them live or just hear them for the first time, there is a free NPR podcast from itunes out there from a show they did in DC a month or two ago.

id di change my mind about cold war kids. i dig them. i'm going to see them live. i'm not sure the national will do it for me. the album i was sampling was the boxer and it was still too mellow for me.

the national isn't for everyone...though i still recommend a live show.

cwk will be a good time...st. john is one of my favs live. just don't stand too close to the bass player...he almost hit me in the head a couple times at the orlando show. he's all over the place and fun to watch!

I have spent the past 1/2 hour trying to find this on iTunes......but I can't :(

(I did however find NPR Podcasts of The New Pornographers, Stars, Iron & Wine, and Animal Collective)

Maybe it isn't on itunes anymore, if not, my bad. The show was actually from 6-20-07 or thereabouts. I am at work and cant access itunes from here, but here is a link from npr's website: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=11115591

I'd love to see them, if they would ever come back. Missed 'em last time they did 2 years ago, just before I gave Alligator a listen. I was hooked with the quickness. Great band.
