Flying to DC....

Does anyone know why it is so damn expensive to fly into DC. I flew to San Francisco for as much as it is going to cost me to fly from Chicago to DC.
Do rates decrease as the date approach?

It's growing up just like me
What are my transit options to get to downtown DC from BWI? Any idea what a taxi would cost?
I've kind of placed myself in a pickle cause I will be in Chicago for guys weekend to take in a few cubs games from 6/19 to 6/22. Trying to reroute the return trip to DCA. My schedule return flight to PIT is to land at 2:15 and I am worried I won't get to DC by driving in time (4 hours).
I thought about a PIT to DCA flight, but they are expensive also.
When I have to fly into BWI - which I avoid if at all possible - I take the commuter train to Union Station, BUT it doesn't run on weekends (although you can take Amtrak from the same place for $20 or so each way). Other options include a $50+ cab or a bus that takes you to a subway stop (probably cheap but may take forever).
Also, I would say the middle of DC, near where the arena is, is more like a 45+ minute ride from BWI, even on a Sunday. I live ten blocks from the arena and have had to make the drive many times. 20 minutes isn't realistic.
If you have the money, most people who live in the district would probably say they would rather fly into National and spend an extra $50 than to fly into either Dulles or BWI.
Then the airline with the lowest rate...go to their main page and they can usually beat it. Prices do fluctuate even throughout the day. Don't jump on anything right away.
Fly to BWI using Southwest and then rent a car for around $22 or $26 for the day and drive to DC and park for $20 for the show downtown or option 2.
Fly to DCA Reagan International Airport. Take the Metro line to Gallery Place China Town which is the stop for Verizon Center.
Destroying DC Scum.
Thanks for the tips......Wish I was having the musical summer you are. I don't feel so bad shelling out extra airline money.
This is the way to go.
Check them out.
thanks,

I wonder if my buddy is going to that show and has extra tix. It is my birthday that day and I should shell out some dough for that show. hmmmm?
that is what I am thinking about doing
hotwire is good if you are flexible with dates and times....
and a proper comparison would be what would it cost you to fly to SF at the same time not what it cost you a few years ago....
airline tickets have increasingly got more expensive over the last year or so... they are making it so only the rich, upper middle class and above, can fly.
While Metro doesn't go out to Dulles, you can pay $9 dollars each way for an approx. 15-min. busride on a VERY nice bus to the West Falls Church Metro on the Orange Line. From there, you're about a 25 min. Metro ride into downtown. Dulles may seem pretty far out, but it's actually not that bad.
when are you thinking of flying out?
PS: thanks to all of you for the travel advice
helps having people who know what's going on in the city you want to navigate
hope to see you all at our gathering before the show!

This is proabbly the easiest way to go, and on a Sunday would be quick.
There are a lot of bars around the MCI center now as well, plenty of places to have some drinks before the show.
