New Bands to Follow

I have an itch to try some new bands. I am hoping some fellow PJ fans can point me in a good direction. Here is what I normally like.

Early Nine Inch Nails, PJ obviously, Alice In Chains, GNR, Queen, Pink Floyd, Jane's Addiction, Blind Melon, Tom Petty, Neil Diamond. Anyway that should give you the jist of my likes. I really prefer a group that has excellent musicians, guitar based sound with lyrics like Off He Goes, rather than Eddie's Hard Sun.

Anyway, I am so far out of the loop I don't know where to begin. Nickleback isn't the worst band in the world but who out there might get me excited and give me someone to want to go see at Summerfest or Lollapalooza.

Thanks in advance for the help.

I honestly have listened to it non stop for at least the past month. Great cd, and their previous one is good as well. Guitar based, good lyrics.....

I've been listening to a lot of female acts lately.
Cat Power (her last three albums are amazing, including You Are Free, Eddie is guest vox on a couple of tracks + Dave Grohl did drums on a few tracks too :) )
    The Knife
    Feist
    Brazilian Girls
    Amy Whinehouse ;)

others: Mike Doughty (formerly of Soul Coughing = try them they are good)
Mike Patton's Peeping Tom and Lovage side projects (formerly of Faith No More = NOT one hit wonders...they are great!!!)

EDIT: I thought you meant "New Bands" to follow but you meant "New bands to follow"
ADD: Radiohead and 311 to my list!!! both incredible and I'm glad they're still around.* you already mentioned NIN and Oasis is bad if you like Brit pop-rock sound plus they got a lot of albums for you to really critique them.

"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

Wilco is a great band, and alot of pj fans follow them too although musically they are two different bands entirely.
    Albums I'd recommend by them
    Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
    A ghost is born
    Sky Blue sky

Wilco isn't new they have been around since the mid 90s but I recently just discovered their greatness. I mean I really sat down and gave them a chance and bam! I understand why people are huge fans.

    Howlin' Rain!
  • Envy on the Coast

is very new and an amazingly good band. A bunch of tempo changes, good riffs, excellent vocals. May be a little too new for most peoples tastes. But the kids got an excellent voice and they are amazing live. Their shows are almost pearljam-esque, though I'd never propose that they were in the same category as Eddie

Wintersleep and The National are probably the two bands that blew me away the most in 2007. Welcome to the Night Sky and Boxer are two of the best albums that were released last year. I have a feeling, as many people who have posted in this thread already did too, that Wintersleep is pretty much everything you are looking for in a new band. They're incredible musicians with great diversity in their music.

Cat Power and Iron & Wine are great suggestions if you like mellow acoustic singer/songwriters.

Explosions in the Sky is a fantastic instrumental band.

The New Pornographers, The Dandy Warhols, and Brian Jonestown Massacre are all good bands that you could probably get into as well. They're significantly more "poppy" and upbeat than most of the stuff you listed but give 'em a shot and see if you like it.

    Howlin' Rain!

Seconded. Their new album is great. Also check out Comets on Fire. Same lead singer/guitarist as Howlin Rain.

Mars Volta are awesome, but not as accessible as Pearl Jam.

The Black Keys are one of my favorite new bands of the last 10-15 years.

They're not that "new", but I've been really into Spiritualized lately.

Another great band that not many people know are the Bevis Frond. They're not really new, either. It's really one guy, Nick Salomon. He's a great musician. On many of their albums, he plays all the instruments and he is an incredible guitarist. Their style is sort of like Syd Barrett meets Jimi Hendrix.
