I hardly ever start threads, but I was listening to Lost Dogs this morning and I thought to myself that Sad really sounds like some of REM's early vibe.

I think you definitely are not wrong for hearing that similarity, but
i think at the Portland show Ed said that the first few notes of Sad
sounded to him like a cool Sleater Kinney riff and thats how he
knew the song was going to be cool (i completely paraphrased there,
its much more clear on the boot)."*JEFF, JEFF, JEFF, JEFF!!!!*" -me at every PJ show i go to.

Musically, I agree. Especially in the opening riffs.
But once the vocals kick in, I can't hear any similarity. Maybe it's because I'm so trained to expect Ed's voice rather than Stipe's.
Nice comparison, though. Parts of the music hearken to Murmur or Document.

I was listening to Green, Out of Time, and Eponymous earlier this week. And I still think the brilliance of REM is an apparent influence on the occasional Pearl Jam composition. Sad is certainly one of those.
An even clearer connection is the fact that Ed inducted REM into the RRHOF. He's a student of their work.

I don't really see it...do you have a specific example?0

As mentioned at the Portland show, if you slow down the main riff for Sad it sounds like something Eddie borrowed from Sleater-Kinney's Hot Rock.0

Its a very good point and yes I do get the same vibe, however I get a stronger one listening to Down and it always reminds me of Eponymous from REM."First of all, there’s the palpable camaraderie and good feeling you get from the entire band as they smile and nod at each other, and huddle together in various formations throughout the show --- They look like they really like each other. They look stoked!"0 -
I don't either - that's the fun thing about music and how people hear different things!Igottago said:I don't really see it...do you have a specific example?

I absolutely agree that it sounds like an early Peter Buck riff. In regards to Ed's quote on Sleater Kinney above, Sleater Kinney (and many others) were heavily influenced by REM.
Members of Sleater Kinney also play in a side project currently with members of REM.

.Wasn't that for some VH1 honors show and not R&R HoF?0 -
It was for the hall of fame.0

I definitely hear it. I can already hear Peter Buck composing it on a Rick. If ever there was a PJ song begging to be played on a Rick, Sad is probably the one.0
