I hardly ever start threads, but I was listening to Lost Dogs this morning and I thought to myself that Sad really sounds like some of REM's early vibe.

i think at the Portland show Ed said that the first few notes of Sad
sounded to him like a cool Sleater Kinney riff and thats how he
knew the song was going to be cool (i completely paraphrased there,
its much more clear on the boot).

But once the vocals kick in, I can't hear any similarity. Maybe it's because I'm so trained to expect Ed's voice rather than Stipe's.
Nice comparison, though. Parts of the music hearken to Murmur or Document.

yep!
An even clearer connection is the fact that Ed inducted REM into the RRHOF. He's a student of their work.

Its a very good point and yes I do get the same vibe, however I get a stronger one listening to Down and it always reminds me of Eponymous from REM.
Members of Sleater Kinney also play in a side project currently with members of REM.
