The White Stripes/Raconteurs

The thing that kills Get Behind Me Satan is the recording... it's so horrible. Other than that, it'd most likely be my favorite by the White Stripes. The Raconteurs are good, but definitely not as good.If I could, think I would give in.0

all due respect to the stripes, whom i love, but they're nowhere near this output.
If the Beatles are the only band that has topped them then they are in good company.Be excellent to each other0 -
I like them both but i think i like the whitestripes better..like other people said the ranconteurs really dont have too much material so it's a bit hard to compare. I do hope they make another album though as i like what they have did so far. These cuts are leaving creases. Trace the scars to fit the pieces, to tell the story, you don't need to say a word.0

Never been able to get into the white Stripes or the raconteurs myself. The singles from elephant i found really boring, and heard the album a few times as well. Really not for me at all.People say im paranoid. Well, they dont say it, but i know that's what they are thinking.0

like the "doom trilogy" of time fades away, on the beach, and tonight's the night.
Well, im not trying to bust your balls and all music and art is subjective anyway but I'd have to put The White Stripes a notch above Neil Young personally. Just my humble opinion and maybe its got something to do with only being 28 and not really being into Neil Young's whole career but I've got to vote for the White Stripes in that battle.
Just a thought on this 3 year period thing but I know back in the day people used to put out a lot more albums. I'd be willing to bet that the Rolling Stones, Elvis, Led Zepplin, Hendrix, and a few other have all had runs like that. I think you'd have to put it in the context of maybe the last 20 years.Be excellent to each other0 -
i thought the question was were they the most prolific of those particular 3 years..... and they were, but nobody can touch the beatles. god , not even close, pick any 3 years together from mid sixties to early 70.....its a done deal.
as for zeppelin:
69 led zeppelin
69 led zeppelin II
70 led zeppelin III
71 led zeppelin IV
so thats FOUR of the best rock albums ever made in 3 years. SHIT! we have a winner!Van '98, Sea I+II '00, Sea '01, Sea II '02, Van '03, Gorge, Van, Cal, Edm '05, Bos I+II, Phi I+II, DC, SF II+III, Port, Gorge I+II '06, DC, NY I+II '08, Sea I+II, Van, Ridge , LA III+IV' 09, Indy '10, Cal, Van '11, Lond, Van, Sea '13, Memphis '14, RRHOF '17, Sea I+II '18, Van I+II, Vegas I+II, Sea I+II '240 -
brendan benson's solo stuff was pretty good too.

here are a few examples of artists who were more "prolific" than the white stripes. but everyone reading this should note that i am not a jack white fan at all, so therefore you can consider my response to be biased if you like. that being said, i don't think too many people will find fault with the artists listed below. i don't feel like taking the time to list each individual album title, but i'm sure you guys will instantly recognize that most of these timeframes encompass the prime of the artists' careers:
Bob Dylan: 11 studio albums between 1962-1970
(29 total studio albums between 1962-1993)
(32 total studio albums from 1962-present)
The Beatles: 12 studio albums between 1963-1970
The Rolling Stones: 9 studio albums between 1964-1967
(15 total studio albums between 1964-1974)
Jimi Hendrix: 3 studio albums between 1967-1968
The Doors: 6 studio albums between 1967-1971
(not counting the 1971 and 1972 albums released without Jim Morrison)
Pink Floyd: 8 studio albums between 1967-1973
Led Zeppelin: 4 studio albums between 1969-1971
Black Sabbath: 5 studio albums between 1970-1973
and i'm sure there were many other bands from that era who released albums with this type of frequency. the reason why mainstream bands are not as prolific as they used to be is largely because the record labels will not allow them to be. it's a money issue, really. if you release multiple albums in the same year, they will end up competing against each other in the record aisle. the end result is that you will not sell as many overall albums as you could if you spaced them out a little more. i have no idea what the white stripes' record contract was like when they first started out, but i would suspect it was a factor in their proficiency.
and let's not assume that any of the above bands wrote all of their material within the timeframes mentioned. most songwriters will already have accumulated an impressive stockpile of songs prior to getting signed (possibly even prior to starting a band). so when they get into the studio, it just becomes a matter of deciding which songs they want to play (betterman is a good example of this). this is one of the reasons why bands tend to put out greater quantities of material early in their careers.0 -
Alex_Coe wrote:Random Curiosity: Since the White Stripes released 4 albums in the space of less than three years, does that make them the most prolific band ever among a three year period? I mean, somebody surely is more prolific, but who? I can't think of anyone at the moment.
Metallica had Load, Reload, Garage Inc and S&M in a similar period. You could argue that tehy only wrote half teh songs, but then they were twice as complex too. The S&M affair was a big production too with a lot of work needed.
I was mildly disappointed with teh Raconteurs, a bit too soft and poppy, too Beatles-like, lacked teh fire of White Stripes, and too littel of JAck's brilliant playing. I'm totally with red mos thinking he is an awesome player, totally channels Robert Johnson in both voice and guitar.
I did like Blue Veins, so much like teh Stones Sister Morphine, Broken Boy Soldiers and a few otheres. Lots that I skip though.Music is not a competetion.0 -
I like how this is turning into a f'in contest. Point's proven. Let's get on w/ talking about the white stripes/raconteurs"Everyone is a patriot in some form or another.... i prefer the intelligent ones."
"She fell funny"
"Klaus Daimler, 40, engineer, calm, collected, German"0 -
The Raconteurs stink coz the Greenhornes stink. I mean, what do you expect from a group whose claim to fame is "Pattern Skies?"0

Jack White is fucking godly.0

I am glad that I started this thread. It's turning into some amusing reads.0

I hope the White Stripes next album is De Stijl and the S/T with Black Math thrown together in a nuclear reactor. The Greenhornes can rot in a sewer for all I care, as long as JW GETS BACK ON TRACK!0

I think we get the point that you don't like The Greenhornes.I share a cigarette with negativity.0 -
Havent really heard the raconteurs but i quite like the white stripes.
JW's voice bugs the crap out of me when he sings live though, he just fucks about too much and i cant listen to anymore.0 -
fuck knows why this thread has turned into a petty squabble instead of a celebration of the great music that both bands produce :(
someone said they think White Stripes are shit... i think you'll find the fucking Backstreet Boys are shit... at least WS and Raconteurs are guitar-based bands who play good old fashioned rock and blues inspired tunes!!
The White Stripes were soooo different when the came on the scene, i've loved them since day one and The Raconteurs album was a fascinating switch to a full band sound for Jack... anyone that doesnt like Broken Boy Soldiers *the song not necessarily the album* is either deaf or gay... or a deaf gay dead thing
i think JW is one of the greatest guitarists of the last 30 years.. raw and intense just like Neil as someone mentioned... his WS sound is amazing!!!!oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.0 -
Love them both for seperate reasons
watching the raconteurs at nottingham rock city in october was amazing, it was so damn electrifying, the natural synch that band has live is awesome, its like watching 4 mates having a laugh and playing blinding tracks at the same time
check out their versions of 'bang bang' and 'teenage kicks', fucking awesome
leeds 26/08/06....electric
paris 11/09/06.....crushed...but estatic
wembley 18/06/07.....oh yes
'listen...you can hear the sustain...you just hold that note and you can go get a bite whilst its still going'
