i really dig 80s Collins solo. i love his drum sound.
  • I am a huge genesis fan, and i was incredibly impressed when i saw them in chicago last fall. Although they aren't for everyone, i think Genesis is an incredibly talented band that had a lot of longevity and an ability to change their sound without taking away from what made the music special in the first place

absofuckinlutely! ages ago there were some pretty long genesis threads going on. granted, only about 4 of us who posted regularly :p...but still mad love! however, MUST stress - peter gabriel era genesis.......not what genesis devolved into under the realm of phil collins, sorry....bleck. gabriel is a fucking musical genius, through and through...amazing lyricist and composer, singer, musician. as musicians all the members of genesis are truly gifted/amazing....but imho collins ruined genesis with his writing style. early genesis was thought-provoking and challenging....just as gabriel STILL is today as a solo artist.

I am myself like you somehow

  • I know the Genesis album without Peter & Phil bombed commercially, i think it was called "Calling all Stations".....but can anyone out there tell me if it is worth picking up? thanx

p.s. huge excitement for Peter's new album
  • I love all things Genesis (except that Revelations album). I think Phil retained the overall "feel" of the band quite well. Duke is an excellent example of that. And i have to agree that Lam Lies Down is the shit, especially the live on (Archives) -

I agree, to an extent, about Phil Collins retaining the Genesis "feel". I am most impressed by the maturation of Genesis' sound throughout their career. No two albums sound the same and that's a pretty remarkable feat over a 30 year career. There are, of course, some duds in terms of individual songs (Whodunnit?, Anything She Does, etc.) but the quality of songwriting and musicianship is incredible.

I was listening to Steve Hackett the other day and had a moment of amazement about the talent that was once collected within that band: Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Steve Hackett, Tony Banks, and Mike Rutherford - that's a pretty stellar line-up...

I LOVE Selling England by the Pound and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway actually almost all the Gabriel stuff, I also like all the stuff without Gabriel up till about 1983 or 1984.

I saw the Abacab Tour in 1982 and the 1983 or 1984 Tour I think the album was just called Genesis, real good shows real good musicians I really liked Chester Thompson the drummer who used to tour with them. I really wish I could have seen them with Gabriel for The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway Tour or even in 1977 when Steve Hackett was still in the band and Bill Bruford played drums on tour, but I was just a young lad at that time since I was born in 1969.

I'm not a huge Genesis fan but went to see them when they toured for this album cos my boyfriend at the time was into them. I wasn't expecting to really enjoy it but it was bloody brilliant, and I find it one of the most memorable concerts i've been too. I think Calling All Stations is definately worth picking up if only for Not About Us :) Obviously not sure how it compares to other Genesis stuff as I said i'm not a big fan :o Hope that helps.

PS. Have got Lamb Lies Down On Broadway which I love

  • Not a big fan, but I do like some of the Gabriel era songs.
They did a one off reunion show at the Milton Keynes Bowl in the UK back in 1982? I went with some friends who had a spare ticket. Things I remember most from that day were the awful support acts, torrential rain and 4 hours to get out of the mud bound car park afterwards.
I did enjoy the show and can remember Peter Gabriel being carried on stage in a coffin at the start, then rising from the dead! It was cool to see Steve Hacket and a big bonus was Phil Collins stayed behind the drum kit for all but one song.
