I have a friend who listens to bands like Slipknot, KoRn, Linkin Park, Disturbed, and yes even Limp Bizkit and believes them to be real metal. Could someone give me help on what might be a good starting band, album, or song-mix to listening to stuff like Thrash Metal (and possibly BM or DM?). Cause, I really think that he's missing out on A LOT of great metal.

  • It's not thrash metal, but Agalloch is an amazing metal band that is really underlooked. http://www.myspace.com/agalloch and listen to Falling Snow.

i dunno man, if he actually enjoys those bands he might be hopeless.

although... well i guess Korn and even Limp Bizkit had some good moments.

to me nothing beats the entire Black Sabbath catalog (with Ozzy) and Metallica's 80s albums.

  • All the suggestions were great although MuDvAyNe and (hed)pe might just get him deeper into the realm of nu-metal, although Slipknot used to be pretty good on their first album. Keep Posting though cause I want to see what other people think too.

Yeah, slipknots first album would fall into "nu-metal", but god that is a solid melt your face album.

    Metallica - Master of Puppets
Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power

These albums define metal as far as I'm concerned. Sabbath is of course amazing, but a very different style from the albums I listed.

I highly doubt that this was intentional, but it's so true!

As for bands, try In Flames. Start him off with Soundtrack to Your Escape, which has some nu metal qualities and then get him into some their older stuff. Also, one listen to Reign in Blood by Slayer should just about kick him off of nu metal forever.
    Jimmy Carter has disco fever.
