I have a friend who listens to bands like Slipknot, KoRn, Linkin Park, Disturbed, and yes even Limp Bizkit and believes them to be real metal. Could someone give me help on what might be a good starting band, album, or song-mix to listening to stuff like Thrash Metal (and possibly BM or DM?). Cause, I really think that he's missing out on A LOT of great metal.

although... well i guess Korn and even Limp Bizkit had some good moments.

Yeah, slipknots first album would fall into "nu-metal", but god that is a solid melt your face album.
Metallica - Master of Puppets
Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power
These albums define metal as far as I'm concerned. Sabbath is of course amazing, but a very different style from the albums I listed.
Metallica
Sabbath
Sepultura
Prong
Clawfinger
Biohazzard
Shadows Fall
Type O Negative
Deep Purple
Rainbow
Judas Priest
Slayer
NIN
Tool
Glenn Hughes
Dio
Machine Head - Burn My Eyes
Ten Masked Men
Speed Metal: Sonata Arctica - Silence or Ecliptica
Gothic Metal: Theatre of tragedy - Velvet darkness they fear
Trash Metal: Metallica - Ride the lightning
Progressive Metal: Dream Theater - Scenes from a memory
Doom Metal: Anathema - Alternative 4 or Paradise lost - Gothic or katatonia - Viva emptiness
Mix of prog, death, doom, melodic and even black metal: Opeth - Any freaking album (Specially Blackwater park or Ghost reveries)
Straight death or black metal I don't like, so no suggestions there from me

As for bands, try In Flames. Start him off with Soundtrack to Your Escape, which has some nu metal qualities and then get him into some their older stuff. Also, one listen to Reign in Blood by Slayer should just about kick him off of nu metal forever.
NOW I KNOW WHY YOU'VE BEEN SHAKIN'...

Sepultura (w/ Max Cavalera)
Trivium

He should (hopefully) also realise that soundgarden aint fucking metal.
Why has no one mentioned Down yet?? The second album is a masterpeice.
Also agreeing with the High on Fire suggestion.
Pantera - Any
Metallica - ...And Justice for All
Mastodon - Any album will blow away any other modern metal. These guys are the Daddies of Metal today.
Avoid Trivium and the like at all costs
