    They're great

Too old for Rock and Roll is one of my favorite songs

Their Guitars are great too. I do realize that they are not for everyone though

Jethro Tull has some great songs! Although, I must say I am a bit dissapointed with the greatest hits cd of theirs I have. I think it could have been better, they should have added the teacher, and mother goose on it. Jethro tull, as someone mentioned above, is a unique band, and an aquired taste. I have liked that band ever since I heard Aqualung, the teacher, and thick as a brick. Thick as a brick was a huge hit on modern "Mix" stations when I was a kid- adult contemporary is what the mix stations genre is called now. "Aqualung" the album (there is a reissue with bonus tracks and an interview I believe), is a brilliant album to say the least.

    still great in concert.
  • Jethro Tull's A Passion Play is one of my favorite albums of all time. It's awesome that they did two concept albums where the albums were just one long song. Most likely never done before in rock music.

Have to add my favorite Tull lyric

"He who made kittens put snakes in the grass"
    The Daystar

"But --you say that Dreams have no power here? Tell me, Lucifer Morningstar...Ask yourselves, all of you...What power would hell have if those here imprisoned were not able to Dream of Heaven?" Dream speaking to Lucifer as written by Neil Gaiman.

Meanwhile back in the year one, when you belonged to no one.

I enjoy listening to the freak, his flute and the band every once in a while. :)

-Stand Up - Their second and possibly best album (remaster has Living in the past single on it)

-Benefit - Their third - excellent as well.

    Aqualung, Thick..., most people know

    - Songs from the Wood - Last great Tull album.

A thread about Jethro Tull, great! Hope you don't mind if I bring it up again. :D

Jethro Tull are among my top five bands of all time. I've got 30 Jethro Tull CD's and have seen them live in 2004 and this year in May. They're just awesome and so unique! Ian Anderson is a genius, but all musicians in the band are extremely skilled. Definitely some of the best music that has been brought to mankind. ;)

Probably one of the most often passed over great bands in classic rock! Its too bad because they are soo soo good.
you couldn't swing if you were hangin' from a palm tree in a hurricane.
  • Stand Up is brilliant! Benefit is great too. Their early stuff was so original in it's day. They really were something!!

  • Jethro Has some amazing works

    Benefit
    Stand Up
Too Old to Rock and Roll
    Minstrels in The Gallery
    Songs from the Wood

    Velvet Green

Walking on velvet green. Scots pine growing.
Isn't it rare to be taking the air, singing.
    Walking on velvet green.
Walking on velvet green. Distant cows lowing.
Never a care: with your legs in the air, loving.
    Walking on velvet green.
Won't you have my company, yes, take it in your hands.
Go down on velvet green, with a country man.
Who's a young girls fancy and an old maid's dream.
Tell your mother that you walked all night on velvet green.
One dusky half-hour's ride up to the north.
There lies your reputation and all that you're worth.
Where the scent of wild roses turns the milk to cream.
Tell your mother that you walked all night on velvet green.
And the long grass blows in the evening cool.
And August's rare delight may be April's fool.
But think not of that, my love,
    I'm tight against the seam.
And I'm growing up to meet you down on velvet green.
Now I may tell you that it's love and not just lust.
And if we live the lie, let's lie in trust.
On golden daffodils, to catch the silver stream
that washes out the wild oat seed on velvet green.
We'll dream as lovers under the stars ---
    of civilizations raging afar.
And the ragged dawn breaks on your battle scars.
As you walk home cold and alone upon velvet green.
Walking on velvet green. Scots pine growing.
Isn't it rare to be taking the air, singing.
    Walking on velvet green.
Walking on velvet green. Distant cows lowing.
Never a care: with your legs in the air, loving.
    Walking on velvet green.

    The Whistler

I'll buy you six bay mares to put in your stable ---
six golden apples bought with my pay.
I am the first piper who calls the sweet tune,
but I must be gone by the seventh day.

So come on, I'm the whistler.
I have a fife and a drum to play.
    Get ready for the whistler.
I whistle along on the seventh day ---
whistle along on the seventh day.

All kinds of sadness I've left behind me.
Many's the day when I have done wrong.
But I'll be yours for ever and ever.
Climb in the saddle and whistle along.

So come on, I'm the whistler.
I have a fife and a drum to play.
    Get ready for the whistler.
I whistle along on the seventh day ---
whistle along on the seventh day.

Deep red are the sun-sets in mystical places.
Black are the nights on summer-day sands.
We'll find the speck of truth in each riddle.
Hold the first grain of love in our hands.

    Pibroch (Cap in Hand)

There's a light in the house in the wood in the valley.
There's a thought in the head of the man.
Who carries his dreams like the coat slung on his shoulder,
Bringing you love in the cap in his hand.
And each step he takes is one half of a lifetime:
no word he would say could you understand.
So he bundles his regrets into a gesture of sorrow,
Bringing you love cap in hand.
Catching breath as he looks through the dining-room window:
candle lit table for two has been laid.
    Strange slippers by the fire.
    Strange boots in the hallway.
Put my cap on my head.
    I turn and walk away.

    Stormwatch
    "Dun Ringill"

Clear light on a slick palm
    as I mis-deal the day
Slip the night from a shaved pack
    make a marked card play
    Call twilight hours down
    from a heaven home
    high above the highest bidder
    for the good Lord's throne
In the wee hours I'll meet you
    down by Dun Ringill ---
oh, and we'll watch the old gods play
    by Dun Ringill
    We'll wait in stone circles
`til the force comes through ---
    lines joint in faint discord
    and the stormwatch brews
    a concert of kings
    as the white sea snaps
at the heels of a soft prayer
    whispered
In the wee hours I'll meet you
    down by Dun Ringill ---
oh, and I'll take you quickly
    by Dun Ringill
  • The first two albums were just killer. Just straight blues rock, like everything at that time. Great great guitar work and bass work (I know the flute is cool too).

"When I was young and they packed me off to school and taught me how not to play the game.
I didn't mind if they groomed me for success or if they said that I was a fool.
So I left there in the morning with their God tucked underneath my arm... their half-assed smiles and the book of rules.
So, I asked this God a question... and by way of firm reply,
He said, "I'm not the kind you have to wind up on Sundays."
So, to my old headmaster (and to anyone who cares):
Before I'm through I'd like to say my prayers.
I don't believe you... you had the whole damn thing all wrong... He's not the kind you have to wind up on Sundays."

Their Christmas album was actually awesome, as good as any of thier stuff and not cheesy.

Walk ino the Light is a cool record, as is Night Cap, two I just got into
  • I find myself listening to 'Heavy Horses' the most. Since I'm owned by 5 felines - "The Mouse Police Never Sleeps" makes me laugh. From time-to-time I catch myself humming "Acres Wild" in a store as I'm walking up and down the aisles. It's funny when an employee comes up to me and asks if I need help finding anything.... huh? "...The Suffolk, the Clydesdale, the Percheron Vie..."
Everyone is born, but not everyone is born the same. Some will grow to be butchers, or bakers, or candlestick makers. Some will only be really good at making Jell-O salad. One way or another, though, every human being is unique, for better or for worse.

JT always played a quality show. back in the day, i caught the kc concerts for both the aqualung tour and the thick as a brick tour. i also saw them in 2005 here in kc.

i will never forget, after they had played the entire TAAB album to start the TAAB tour show, Ian Anderson said, "And now for our next number.."
Down the street you can hear her scream youre a disgrace
As she slams the door in his drunken face
    And now he stands outside
And all the neighbours start to gossip and drool
He cries oh, girl you must be mad,
What happened to the sweet love you and me had?
Against the door he leans and starts a scene,
And his tears fall and burn the garden green
