All of you who love Chamillionaire and 50 Cent and all of that new rap should check out The Roots - The Tipping Point, that is real rap(Alt-Rap) also The Jurassic 5. Others as well. Their stuff really is awesome!

EDIT: Common's early stuff is also good!

P.S.: I like his albm "Be" but it's too mainstream and won't help people who love "Fiddy" hear real rap.

If someone likes Chamillionaire and 50 cent why would they want to hear the Roots? It's a different segment of Hip Hop altogether. The Tipping Point is arguably the worst Roots album of them all. The new Album "Game Theory" drops next week and it is sick!

And btw Common's album "Be" was the Best hip hop album of last year IMO. That is real hip hop.

The Tipping Point is easily my favorite Roots album. It is loose and fun from start to finish.

These guys are by far the best thing going in hip hop today. Their new record is due out here pretty quick I think I heard the other day. Looking forward to it.

Someone also mentioned J5. I just picked up their Power In Numbers disc the other day and its very strong as well. This record has sort of an late 80's/early 90's sound to it, which is my personal favorite era of hip hop. I know they just released a new one as well which I need to check out.

So they can hear real rap.

The Tipping Point is awesome, and a little bit more mainstream accesable.

And If a Fiddy listener bought Common's "Be" , they would only listen to the hit songs Go! and Testify.

Also Jurrasic 5 is great if I didn't already say so.

  • The Roots "Game Theory"

Definitely much darker and more ambient sounding for a Hip-Hop album.

The Return of Malik B. Back rapping with the crew. He was missed on the Tipping Point.

Stand out tracks so far are:

    A Clock with no Arms
    Here I Come
    Atonement
    Game Theory

As for J5, there new album kinda sucks. A duet w/ Dave Matthews? No more Cut Chemist DJ'ing? = Pretty weak album IMO

The Roots kick ass live. I saw them with Talib Kweli and Pharcyde in Baltimore and they were incredible. I also saw them in Texas a few years ago and Black Thought opened up by spitting a 30 minute freestyle. No bullshit. ?uestlove is an animal on the drums and they even have a guitarist who plays solos from time to time. Definitely a band (and I don't usually call rap groups "bands") to check out.

this duet track is the only thing I've heard off of the album and I agree that it is not anything too special. Besides no Cut Chemist, what is wrong with the rest of the record Sourth?

I just think it sounds a little bit too polished for a J5 record. It picks up towards the end. It's not bad, it's just the worst of the bunch. I bought the Rhymefest album on the same day and I find myself listening to that one alot more.

Saw them in NYC a couple weeks ago. What a show. Dare I say PJ-esque? 2.5 hrs... many extended jams... covers... long encore... they leave it all on stage and definitely give the audience their money's worth.

  • this new album is awesome. i like my rap mellow and non-threatening, and that's what this album brings to the table.

some of the beats remind me of A Tribe Called Quest - which is great.

Anyone else pick up the album?

Yup, I love it. It keeps getting better the more I listen.

Same- this could end up being one of my favorite releases of '06.
