Anyone like Meshuggah?

It seems I'm getting into metal after years of mostly ignoring it (aside from a bit of Deftones, Korn and NIN - none of which is really metal imo).

I've just bought Meshuggah - Obsen, and I love it. Totally insane but amazingly played and very technical. I didn't realise metal could be so musically challenging, but it's nice to know it can. :D

I've also bought the new album by a band called Gojira. Any other metal recommendations from these, or other bands? I need to get me more of this kind of metal.

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.

I have all Down's albums, demos, sessions and even the deluxe edition of Over The Under winging it's way to me as I type... I'll sort some out for you.

Mastodon? Get Remission and Leviathan to start you off.

Not a big fan of Opeth, had chance to get into them but never took it. I think Jennytree is though (might be mistaken :o) so it might be worth asking her on that front.

What do you reckon to Sepultura's Against?

I like this band and even got to see them live a couple of years ago in ATL- great live band.

Check out Sevendust and Nonpoint- both great metal bands.

I'm always excited about hearing the new Mudvayne album that's coming out in a few weeks.

What do you reckon to Sepultura's Against?

The only Sepultura I found was 'Arise'.. I haven't loved it as much as I've loved stuff Sarah's played me, which is slower, more chuggy and tribal. This one seemed to be earlier and a bit more thrash.

I'm just still not amazingly keen on thrash, sorry. I've tried. :o

Oh I thought you had Against, sorry! :o

Check out the Roots album then. Far less thrashy and more tribal... oh and you won't go wrong with Soulfly ;)

The new Meshuggah album is not bad.

I do love some mastodon. Leviathan is my fav by them but i like all three albums.

I love Opeth they are more prog metal i'd recomend Blackwater Park.

If you like your metal sludgy and kind of groovin try som High on Fire. My fav by them is their album Blessed Black wings. I've heard it described well by two people as:
"If i was a T Rex back in the day i'd want to hunt to this music"
    and
"Seriously this should be the sound track to a Conan film"
Pike (their guitarist) fucking rules on guitar.

Also another Metal band that is easily accesable is Baroness from Savannah GA. Kinda sound a little like Mastodon but not quite as heavy or as talented but still a very good band i enjoy.

I love Amon Amarth. They are viking metal. If you like hearing a band sing about Vikings, Odin, thor, beer, ravens, more beer, vahalla etc with crushingly catchy riffs these are your guys.

I'm not much for the extreme death metal stuff you'll have to get someoen else to help there.

One other i would suggest is Nile. They are also very good.

Opeth are pretty good Mark, especially their older stuff. Check out Still Life first, then My Arms, Your Hearse and Blackwater Park.

As for other metal recommendations, if you like technical stuff as you say, check out Unquestionable Presence by Atheist, it's practically jazz-metal but heavier than that suggests. You could also try Agalloch if you find you like Opeth. Some other greats bands are Emperor, Demilich, Neurosis, Ulver, Wolves in the Throne Room and Cynic.

ObZen is simply awesome. Others I have are Nothing and the I (ep). You would like these.

I only have the first Gojira - From Mars to Sirius. I love it, sounds like it would be worth your while.

Opeth and Mastodon are on top of their games. These are bands that you should check out. Mastodon are more straight up metal where Opeth are all over the damn place. I would get the latest Opeth release Watershed for starters. Mastodon has been covered.

Releases that I have been listening to a ton are:
The Baroness - the Red Album
    Withered - Folie Circulaire
    Krallice - s/t

Baroness are probably the easiest to get into, the other 2 fall more on the darker/black side of metal. All of them though know how to play their instruments very well. Krallice is so far my favorite release of 2008.

Oh, and even though it's nothing like any of the other stuff here, everyone should listen to Hvis Lyset Tar Oss by Burzum at least. You might be horrified, especially if you read the back story to Burzum but it's some of the most powerful music I've ever heard. It's also a rare occasion where all the insane, evil "satanic" elements of this stuff isn't a pose.

Meshuggah is the shit!! The new one (Obzen) is pretty good, but you should check out some of their older stuff like Chaosphere or Contradictions Collapse.

Also do yourself a favor and check out a band called Candiria they are more jazz/metal and even though they don't tour anymore they are one of the best bands I have ever seen/listened to. Truly in a class of their own.
(Candiria albums - Surrealistic Madness, Process of Self Development, 300% Density, or The Coma Imprint. They also have one called What Doesn't Kill You... and even though that one is good too, its a little more radio-friendly stuff than the others)

Man, that's an album I never thought I'd see mentioned here!

Great, great record...absolutely mindblowing musicianship. I met those guys a few times years ago and they're cool dudes too. They're in the studio now, working on their first album in 15 years.

I recommend to anyone...the last 4 albums by Death. Human, Individual Thought Patterns, Symbolic, The Sound of Perseverance. Gotta love the Floridian stuff from the 90s!
I am lost, I'm no guide. But I'm by your side...

Oh god, I love Death. What a band. Symbolic is absolutely incredible.

    RIP Chuck :(

That's really cool that you met Atheist. Apparently they reformed and released a follow up album this year, after all this time. I haven't heard it though.

Yeah, Rand's brother was a friend of mine. He's not part of the reunion though, its only Shaeffer and Flynn, and I think Tony Choy may be on bass too, so 3/4 of the Unquestionable lineup.

The record isn't out. They're working on it now. Their last album was 1993's "Elements."

I don't want to rain on anyones parade but the bands mentioned hear aren't considered metal all, they are considered nu-metal. The most watered down, commercial heavy music you can buy. Pure bullshit (except for Mydvayne's LD 50 which was original at the time).

I have been a PJ / Metal fan for along time, I spin Metal vinyl as a hobby on weekends.

Honestly you can't go wrong with any Testament album. Even The Ritual, which a lot of their fans don't appreciate.

Also I wouldn't include Cryptic Writings in the Megadeth list. Its a decent album, but its not a prototypical metal record.
