  • Day Dream Nation is excellent and what their most known for. But Washing Machine and their latest one, Rather Ripped are the most accessible IMO.
  • definitely Rather Ripped

Rather Ripped their latest is probalby their most accesable.

Also Sonic Nurse is pretty accesable.

As mention after you hear rather ripped and you want to dig deeper daydream nation is where it is at.

  • I agree with what they're all saying.

Rather Ripped is probably the most accessable because it's the least noisy.. All their gear was stolen recently (ALL of it) so they had to start from square one with "Ripped".

  • their gear was stolen in 1999. Since then they've released NYC Ghost and Flowers, Murray Street, Sonic Nurse and Rather Ripped. They've pretty much retrieved all their stolen gear since 99 though.

ah,.. but I'm sure they were talking about Rather Ripped in the article (i read it in a very recent magazine somewhere...).

Maybe they decided to take that approach after the experience with the theft?

    I dunno..

Rather Ripped is a good choice.....my initial reaction was Dirty - probably has some of their most accessible songs, but it also some pretty raunchy stuff on it

Sonic Youth is one of my fav bands - you really can't go wrong with any of their albums....if you like whatever you choose you MUST check out Daydream Nation - its their best IMO

I would cite poor taste in music by the general public.

+ inability to appreciate/enjoy the kind of rabid noise machine sonic youth is (that's a compliment).

Yeah, both Dirty and Goo I think most Pearl Jam fans could get into. But then again, the reaction of 10clubbers up front last tour was less than polite, so I don't know.

Both those albums are great starter albums. Murray Street is my favorite. I love that album. Sonic YOuth is a great band!!!!

    I would second that.

People buy it thinking it is going to be something it's not. They hear their favorite band was influenced by Sonic Youth, buy the cd and thnk what is this noise??? It's an acquired taste but well worth it!!!!

As A New Yorker, I may be biased, but I think they are awesome

I'm not as familiar with the last couple of releases as I am with the rest of the catalogue but my favorites are:

Experimental Jet Set, Trash, No Star
    Daydream Nation
    Evol
    Sister
    Dirty
    A Thousand Leaves
    Washing Machine

In my opinion, you really can't go wrong with most of their material.

And as a live band, they up the ante even further.
"Stunned by my own reflection, It's looking back, sees me too clearly and I swore I'd never go there again, Not unlike a friend that politely drags you down, down, down"

When you see me on the street, yell out "FAVO!!!"

I've been to alot of Pearl Jam shows; So fucking what.
  • daydream nation to this day has not clicked with me

i'm a big fan of their last three records though. i would suggest someone start there if they're looking for accessible SY

When I learned that Sonic Youth was an influence on PJ, I was going to check them out to see if I liked them, but I never did. From everything I had read and heard, it seemed that the influence was more along the lines of how Sonic Youth approached the music industry and how they treated their fans. I never really thought much of them until PJ's 2000 tour when Sonic Youth opened. The first song was this barrage of noise that was a little irritating, but after that, they played some stuff that I really enjoyed. That performance got me to go out and get some of their stuff. I don't have a whole lot from their catalog, but from what I do have, I think Goo is a good choice for a PJ fan. I finally got around to getting Rather Ripped and am looking forward to listening to it.
