"If it's going to be THAT kind of party, I'm gonna stick my dick in the mashed potatoes."

Anybody know what that's sampling? I've laughed probably 100 times at that line over the course of my life and I'd really like to know.
“Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It’s hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It’s round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you’ve got about a hundred years here. There’s only one rule that I know of, babies — ‘God damn it, you’ve got to be kind.’” - Kurt Vonnegut

  • I'm not sure, but I've had:

    Phone is ringing,
    Oh my god.

Just stuck in my head the past week.
If I could, think I would give in.

I had thought the lyrics were...
"If it's going to be that kind of party, I'm gonna stick my dick in somebody's potatoes."

anyway, the Ill Communication was the first BB album I bought and still think it's their best work musically.

That line is at the very beginning of the movie 'Waiting.' I can't say whether or not that's where the sample came from. Funny movie though, if you've ever worked in food service.
she was underwhelmed, if that's a word

The Beastie Boys used that sample over a decade before that movie was made
  • another often talked about item from this album, is what or who the hell is ma bell and what's with the ill communication......

It refers to the bell telephone company and troubles they had with some phones.

    from wiki:

    * The Beastie Boys refer to the Bell System in identical lines from the songs "Get It Together" and "Sure Shot", on the Ill Communication album:

"Like Ma Bell, I got the ill communication"

    * The Beastie Boys again reference the Bell System in the song "Root Down", also off the Ill Communication album, with the line

"MCA grab the mic' and Ma Bell will connect you"

  • The amount of samples used on the album Paul's Boutique is insane. Here's a website that lists all the samples used for each song:

  • I love when they sample themselves on Paul's Boutique... that's just awesome.
If I could, think I would give in.
  • i don't know why, but i've always thought that that sample was richard pryor. i have no evidence to support this, but it's what i've always believed for some reason.

"It's a trip, it's got a funky beat, and I can bug out to it."

I always loved that one as well.

Paul's Boutique is their best album I think - even though "Professor Booty" is my hands down favorite Beastie song and not on there.

    WORD>

the way MCA delivers this verse is the best. its been my fav for years....and not to mention all the beat changes...

    So many wack M.C.'s
    You get the T.V. bozack
Ain't even gonna call out your names
    'Cause you're so wack
But one big oaf whose faker than plastic
A dictionary definition of the word spastic
You should have never started something
    That you couldn't finish
    'Cause writin' rhymes to me
    Is like Popeye to spinach
I'm bad ass move your fat ass
    'Cause you're wack son
Dancin' around like you think you're Janet Jackson
Thought you could walk on me
To get some ground to walk on
I'll put the rug out under your ass
    As I talk on
I'll take you out like a sniper on a roof
Like an M.C. at the fever in the D.J. booth
    With your headphones strapped
    You're rockin' rewind pause
Tryin' to figure out what you can do to go for yours
But like the pencil to the paper I got more to come
One after another you can all get some
So you better take your time
    And meditate on your rhyme
    'Cause your shit'll be stinking
    When I go for mine
    And that's right y'all don't get uptight y'all
    You can't say shit
    Because you're biting what I write y'all
And that's wrong y'all over the long haul
    You can't cut the mustard
    When you're fronting it all

Parkey, a member of the Beastie Boys Message Board, was able to repeat the question when interviewing Horovitz and Mike Diamond for an article to be published in Clash magazine.

    Drumroll, please!

The source of the mashed potatoes sample -- according to Adam Horovitz -- is comedian Mantan Moreland from his album That Ain't My Finger.
