the roots of blues: Robert Johnson, Son House. Also really good: Howlin' Wolf.
  • JOHN LEE HOOKER IS BY FAR THE BEST!!!

for a more laid back acoustic blues, check out Mississippi John Hurt, unbelievable.

this is more modern and a bit unclassifiable, but the Black Keys are two white guys who make some pretty damn good, hard edged, bluesy music.

As for real old school blues, I'm not that experienced in that realm....but I do agree with what everyone else has said but ill add that Eric Clapton(and Cream) has done some real good blues/ blues rock in his day. Sessions For Robert J, a tribute to Robert Johnson, is quite good.
I've faced it, a life wasted, and I'm never going back again.

    Also look into:

Jonny Lang and (on the female side of things) Susan Tedeschi.
