Future Boy - The Catherine Wheel

I was driving home from work just now and listening to college radio (WQFS Greensboro 90.9 FM) when I heard Future Boy by The Catherine Wheel. I thought the song was amazing so I Googled the lyrics (didn't know who sang it or the song title). I'd never heard of the band. I was unable to find this song on Youtube other than a solo cover by the former lead singer Rob Dickinson (apparently he's Bruce's cousin). The YouTube version doesn't do the song I heard on the radio justice but it's still pretty good. Is the rest of their stuff as good as this song?

such a great song you posted ... this song is on Adam & Eve ... the one "hit" that I remember from this album (at least, it was played on alternative radio) was "Delicious" ... which is ok ... but, Future Boy, Ma Solituda, Sattelite ... all better songs.

Oddly enough, on my flight back from Boston earlier this week, I listened to my Catherine Wheel catologue ... and yes, the rest of their stuff is as good as this song.

I saw these guys several times in the early 90s ... Boston *loved* them and local radio station WFNX played them all the time (I think one of the DJs, Julie Kramer, was IN LOVE with Rob Dickinson).

Each of their first 4 albums are fantastic ... Ferment, Chrome, Happy Days and the afore mentioned Adam & Eve ...

If you get one album get Ferment ... off that ...

    Texture - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a93CdqA72I8

    Black Metallic - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0O9uNvoMec

    I Want to Touch you - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yg7-mRXg5wk

    Others ...

Judy's Staring at the Sun - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4pCp1NazgGo (This is the single version which has Tanya Donelly of Belly singing the second verse, the album version she only does backing vocals)

    Crank - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGqprbDoh4g&feature=related

Waydown - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8e3HVzVmGa8 (this song rips)

Delicious - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PmB3qs6lC0 (wasn't a huge fan of this one ... it's ok, but, it was all over the radio)

    One of my faves ...
Eat My Dust You Insensitve Fuck - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gNZ-xgoAcQ&feature=related

Their last album, Wishville ... well, it lacked ... there were a few ok songs, but, it wasn't up to their standards ... it was their last album and then their lead singer, Rob Dickinson, went solo ...

I'm not a fan of Rob's solo album. REALLY wish these guys would get together for another tour.

(FYI ... I had to stop posting, I could have gone on for another page or so)

Loved them. Haven't thought of them in a long time, may have to listen soon. :)

Goodness me I didn't expect to see that band name pop up here!

Great band. Part of the UK 'shoegazing' era. Black Metallic is one brilliant song. Actually, that whole album is pretty amazing.

    Yeah! Catherine Wheel! :D

  • I saw them @ Summersault in Edmonton years ago at a festival featuring Smashing Pumpkins, APC, Foo Fighters, OLP. I was so pissed off that they got demoted to the second smaller stage.

Great band & Rob's got a great vocal range. They are on hiatus right now but I read an interview with Rob saying he's not opposed to getting together for another CW album

the lead singer, Rob Dickinson, has a few solo albums out and tours ... he usually plays about 5 or 6 CW songs during his set ...

No clue what the rest of the band is doing.

The rest of the band, last I heard, was in a group called 50 Ft. Monster.

I really liked Rob's solo record; it's a bit more 'pop' than CW for a few tunes, but, since Rob was the main songwriter for CW, a handful of songs sound like they would fit right in on Happy Days (a couple of CW members played on select tracks, which lends to my theory).

Go see Rob live next time he tours your area. He's got a great sense of humour and puts on a fantastically intimate show. I had the fortune of meeting him after his show in Vancouver about 2 years ago, and he was an absolute sweetheart.

I didn't realize he did this, but, it looks like Rob D. re-released his solo album (Fresh Wine for the Horses) and added his solo take on several CW tunes.

If you're going to pick up the solo disk, make sure you get these songs too ...
