Black Crowes Say Maxim Review a Fraud

NEW YORK (AP) — The Black Crowes are lashing out at Maxim magazine for reviewing the band's new album — apparently without actually hearing it first.

The review, published in Maxim's March issue, gives the Crowes' "Warpaint" a rating of two-and-a-half stars out of five.

"The writer — who has not heard the album since advance CDs were not made available — wrote what appears to be a disparaging assessment anyway, citing, `it hasn't left Chris Robinson and the gang much room for growth,'" said a statement on the band's official Web site.

The band's manager, Pete Angelus, said the magazine explained that its review was an "educated guess."

"It speaks directly to the lack of the publication's credibility," Angelus said in a statement. "In my opinion, it's a disgrace to the arts, journalism, critics, the publication itself and the public. What's next — Maxim's concert reviews of shows they never attended, book reviews of books never read and film reviews of films never seen?"

A representative for the magazine would not confirm or deny to The Associated Press whether the writer actually listened to the album. Instead, Maxim released this statement in response: "Maxim will continue to provide our readers with information that is important to them, whether it is about fashion, lifestyle, technology, music, movies and more."

"Warpaint," the band's first album in seven years, is set for release March 4. The blues-rock group, fronted by Chris Robinson, has released only one song from the disc, "Goodbye Daughters of the Revolution."

The band's hits include "Hard to Handle" and "She Talks to Angels."

Maxim has a lot of credibility, huh?

I'll admit, Maxim is an entertaining read while on the toilet. It's mindless fun. I had a subscription for a while but definitely wouldn't pay for one. It's pretty easy to get a free subscription from them which might tell us something.

    maxim sucks...

NEW YORK - Maxim magazine has apologized for publishing a negative review of the Black Crowes' new album by a writer who hadn't listened to the whole CD.

The review in Maxim's March issue gives the Crowes' "Warpaint" a rating of two-and-a-half stars out of five. The band posted an exasperated statement on its Web site last week saying the Maxim writer hadn't heard the entire album because advance copies weren't available. The Crowes' manager, Pete Angelus, said the magazine explained that its review was an "educated guess."

Maxim editorial director James Kaminsky responded Tuesday with this statement: "It is Maxim's editorial policy to assign star ratings only to those albums that have been heard in their entirety. Unfortunately, that policy was not followed in the March 2008 issue of our magazine and we apologize to our readers."

A spokeswoman for the magazine contacted by The Associated Press declined to say whether the writer would face disciplinary action.

"Warpaint," the Black Crowes' first album in seven years, is set for release March 4. The blues-rock group, fronted by Chris Robinson, has released only one song from the disc, "Goodbye Daughters of the Revolution."

The band's hits include "Hard to Handle" and "She Talks to Angels."

Just makes you wonder how many times this has actually happened. Basically a popularity contest. I can make an educated guess that the writer won't be suspended.

Good point. The problem is their sister publication, Blender, claims to be a music magazine and they often print the same reviews.

  • THE BLACK CROWES MANAGER REJECTS MAXIM'S ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALLS FOR

    MAXIM’S FULL ACCOUNTABILITY

AND IMMEDIATE APOLOGY TO THE BLACK CROWES

Maxim magazine has issued a formal “apology” for publishing a negative review of the Black Crowes' new album by a writer who hadn't listened to the CD.

Pete Angelus, manager of The Black Crowes, stated, “In my opinion, Maxim’s fabrication of an album review is highly unethical and indefensible. This issue potentially pertains to all artists and their craft, and a publication which apparently has no respect for either.”

Maxim’s Editorial Director, James Kaminsky, issued this statement to the media: "It is Maxim's editorial policy to assign star ratings only to those albums that have been heard in their entirety. Unfortunately, that policy was not followed in the March 2008 issue of our magazine and we apologize to our readers."

Angelus responds, “Maxim seems to continue in their attempt to deceive the public with their usage of the word 'entirety.' At the most, Maxim could have only heard the one complete song that has been released to radio, before publishing their 'album review.' It comes as no surprise that Maxim has elected to apologize to their readers now that the world has been informed of their deception; however, that is not full accountability.”

In closing, Angelus said, “In my opinion, Maxim’s ‘apology’ is self-serving damage control by failing to mention The Black Crowes. The appropriate action from Maxim is to immediately issue a public apology to The Black Crowes for disparaging both the band and their soon to be released new album ‘Warpaint’ without having heard the material.”

Here`s the response to the apology from the Crowes` camp.........

Maxim is a joke, always was. it's for guys who never lose, wear tight pink shirts and gell their hair... aand are complete assholes to their girlfriends.... and who always are looking for a fight.

Rolling Stone is a joke too. they gave Nevermind two stars when it first came out then once it blew up jumped on the grunge bandwagon.

While I don't think Rolling Stone is the best judge of music, I do find it entertaining and enjoy a good deal of the articles in each issue. For the record, Nevermind received 3 stars upon release, not 2.

I don't find it particularly surprising that regular readers of Maxim would not be predisposed to listen to the Black Crowes. Nor do I find it to be a travesty that the editors and writers at Maxim are not paragons of journalistic integrity. I, for one, will buy this cd (hard copy) the day it comes out. And I will enjoy it. I will glory in new music created by a band that I had assumed was not going to release another album. And if their last tour is any indication, the new cd is going to be really strong.

No big deal. They sure changed there tune once it became popular. Of course, I have often misjudged an album when it came out then realized much later how good/bad it was...

Blender's even worse; it had Primus as one of the worst bands ever, when we all know talent-wise, they are one of the best

i understand why people buy these magizines.. hot ass girls on the covers... but who cares about that, just go buy some porn!

if those girls weren't in Blender or Maxim who would buy them??

only magizine i subscribe to and trust is Decibel. although it's mainly metal (a little too much black metal for my taste) it does have some fantastic articles. much better than that other so called metal magizine, Revolver. utter shit.

LOL!!! So True. Blender sucks in the true sense of the word sucks. I have read it a few times and it seems the people writing the stories have never actually gone to any shows to see the bands they are reviewing.

And Primus Sucks because I love them and I am one with the frizzle fry (see nic for further explanation

February 27, 2008 -- RAPPER Nas was shocked when Maxim gave his new album, "N - - - - r," a 2 1/2-star review - because it isn't even finished yet. "I'm finishing the album now, and it will be out April 22," Nas told Page Six. Maxim has since apologized for the premature review, but Nas doesn't care. "I'd prefer [a review from] Playboy," the rapper said. "That kind of stuff doesn't reach my radar or effect anybody around me. I don't know what a music rating from Maxim is . . . I don't know what it even means really." Maxim also reviewed the Black Crowes' album, "War Paint," without listening to it in its entirety.

From what I've heard, this album is going to be amazing... Sadly, I have only heard one song, so I am not going to judge it just yet... but I will say, I can't wait to get this!
