  • harvest is really good. especially:
alabama, words, harvest, old man, out on the weekend

thought maybe i would suggest one of his others such as:

    on the beach
amazing album, maybe my favorite of his. walk on.. see the sky about to rain.. revolution blues.. on the beach.. motion pictures.. ambulance blues.. great songs. this has a mostly laid back/acoustic feel.

    tonight's the night
also very good.. one of his rawest and takes time to get used to it, especially the vocals but has some killer tracks.. mellow my mind.. albequerque.. lookout joe..
sounds like he's drunk the whole time. kind of fun.. kind of moving

    after the gold rush
one of his more well known, and one of my favorites. plenty of classics on here. i love tell me why, and the title track, and southern man, and dont let it bring you down. good old classic straightforward neil.

those are probably his most consistant and best but i would also check out some of his 90s stuff, which is totally awesome as well but probaby would suggest his 70s stuff first

mirrorball, sleeps with angels, freedom, comes a time, zuma, greendale, prairie wind, silver and gold, harvest moon, everybody knows this is nowhere, ragged glory, and his self titled debut are all also very good, but i would start with one of the 4 i briefly elaborated on.

my suggestion would most likely be to start with "after the gold rush" but you cant go wrong with anything really...
    saw things so much clearer

Greatest Hits may be a good starting point for the casual fan. If you really dig what's on there, venture deeper.
I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me.

Landing On Water must be first. If you're not willing to go down that road with Neil, then forget it. :)
Using the word "methinks" in your message board posts doesn't make you look smart.
  • His live albums are really good too.
    Have to second that.

pick up his greatest hits first, i think it has 16 tracks on it which are all great.

....and MIRRORBALL, he recorded it with PJ if you didn't know. Great album!

a casual neil young fan. i've never encountered one of those before.

having needle and the damage done as my all time fave song is going to bias me towards harvest. i find zuma a good one as well. comes a time. love motorcycle mama. i also like sleeps with angels.

I would say go with the Greatest Hits as well...I picked up Sleeps With Angels and Harvest Moon last week..2 great cd's. Now if you like Neil's acoustic work and his work with Crazy Horse..get both of those cd's listed above.
