Afghan Whigs - Black Love

What a fucking record, anyone who doesn't own this masterpiece should be ashamed of themselves. Dark, soulful rock of the very highest order, words can barely do justice to how damn perfect this album is, with its amazing atmospherics, soaring chorus' and monsterous grooves - it doesn't get any better than this.

One thing I really miss... their excellent videos. "Honky's Ladder" and "Going to Town" were great, and "Gentleman" was off the chart.
I admit I was wrong on them. I was certain that they were going to be huge, but they never really caught on
we sit around and wonder exactly why our marriage should feel threatened by gay marriage
You are right about the first two Twilight singers records, but the new one, Powder Burns is incredible. It's far more like Afghan Whigs, lots of memorable songs with big chorus'.
The Whigs were an amazing band, Black Love is outstanding album (lacking only decent production values, grr), but I give 1969 the Best Whigs album award.
The Twilight Singers after a iffy start (the debut is patchy) hit full stride with the wonderfully dark 'Blackberry Belle' (the title track features a Dulli/Lanigan duet ) and the this years offering 'Powder Burns' is nearly as good again.
Also check out 'Amber Headlights' released as a Dulli solo album last year - while not as strong as the very best Whigs/Twilight stuff it's still damn good, the song 'Pussywillow' is one of Dulli's very best.
The Whigs are just about one of the greatest bands. Just a shame hardly anyone ever listened to 'em... Black Love - genius album, but then again, i think Gentlemen/1965 were too.... it depends what mood you're in, really.
I'm surprised at the general underwhelming opinions on the first Twilight album, though. that's a truly great record. it's a bit of a change from his usual fare - the influence of fila brazilia, i guess, but with dulli/happy/smith singing on it it's amazing!! the tracks from that album also sound fantastic when he plays them live.
aaaaaah... thoughts of dulli.... mmmmmm.... wanna go for a ride......
free your mind... and your ass will follow...
i agree about the twilight singers. all their records have been amazing. powder burns IS more whigs- like than the rest.

Oh HELL Yeah! Can I get an AMen(t)??? Keith, where you at?
Much love for the MAN and the whigs.
I've been a fan since my best friend brought back Congregation on christmas break from Cornell all of those years ago. Damn, it's like yesterday.
I am really into the new Twilight Singers too. As someone mentioned it has a very Whigs throwback feel to it - and I like it!
First Twilight album just good, but after that everything has been quality - Blackberry Belle tops it for me - Number 9 is the best album closer ive ever heard.
Like someone else said, it depends what mood you're in I guess.
they releasin an ep as far as i know!!
tho ive never heard em or the afghan whigs.......tut tut!!

The ep is out, and it is excellent!! It's called A Stitch In Time.
As for Afghan Whigs start with Black Love, then Gentlemen and 1965. But also, you should definitely pick up Powder Burns by the Twilight Singers - superb record.

Yeah I love the way the album kind of comes full circle. Crime Scene Pt. 1 is such an incredible way to start a record, so much atmosphere and melancholy, then it just bursts into life with that soaring chorus. I would kill to hear that song live.
Crime Scene is definitely one of those openers that will draw you back to the album again and again. I'll put on the record just to hear that one song, and then listen the whole way through twice over.
It's also weird how Dulli never really gets credited with making a good amount of concept albums through the years. Gentlemen was the mother of all breakup records, Black Love was like a revenge movie in music, and Blackberry Belle was the story of a man's descent into suicide. And then Green Day get all the credit for an album about how Bush sucks.
I never picked up on that with Blackberry Belle. Any links to discussions on this or will it be obvious once I listen to it with that knowledge?
Aside from "Black out the windows, it's party time" I guess...
