Ok the start of the song is just *good*, but wait for the ending - holy shit he pulls off some awesome notes! It really is hard to believe how much his voice has recovered since some of those dodgy Audioslave days. I'm so glad he's decided to record a new album quickly, his voice is sounding so strong again (let's just hope the music is good!).

*Just found the video too, looks like a tv special he did: http://youtube.com/watch?v=gAyLdBWDiYI

Well, I've never actually encountered common ground with a Bush supporter, but that was indeed tits

  • the last minute or so of that was better than the recorded version i think.

shocking! I mean, I saw him live three times on the carry on tour, but not that shit hot.

soooo glad he gave up smoking.
  • Cornell takes a lot of shit in the pit, but the man can sing.
    one foot in the door
the other foot in the gutter
    sweet smell that they adore
    I think I'd rather smother

  • Here are the details of that show - see first entry on page:

It was recorded in December when Chris was in Mexico, and broadcast earlier this month. Great performance - the whole thing is circulating as a DVD.

I'll say! It's such a massive 'screw you' to all the people that wrote him off and said he wasn't sounding as good these days. Imagine if this is what he's pulling off live at the moment, how good he's gonna be sounding in the studio. I'm expecting a big return to form.

I'm starting to think I'm crazy but I to me he's lost a lot of power in his voice. It's obviously not the same as it was, but it's better than the Audioslave days.

It bothers me that he always sounds so bored and emotionless unless he's really pushing his voice. Like how he sings "Like A Stone". He's been singing like that with the old songs now as well.
    Stone Gossard...riffmeister extraordinaire!

I am a man, I am advanced.....I am the first man to borrow Stone's leather pants!

I think it largely depends on his mood on the night. I don't think he's necessarily bored, so much as tired. His touring schedule was really intense last year and must have really taken it out of him at times. So perhaps he holds back on some of the easier parts, conserving his energy for the higher notes and stuff.

The problem with Cornell is that he set himself such high standards in the studio, that it would be nearly impossible to replicate that night after night - no singer is going to be perfect EVERY night. But, as this recording shows, given the abuse he has put his voice through over the past 20 years, through drink, drugs and screaming his lungs out, he still has a remarkably stellar set of pipes. And more importantly, he's still better than 99% of hard rock singers out there in the mainstream.
  • Yeah that's a pretty good version, he's been like that on all the versions of Say Hello 2 Heaven towards the end of the tour; those last 30 seconds are intense. I also feel that this performance of Hunger Strike is better than the original, and probably the best his voice has sounded in his entire career, check out the end: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yEBwrtjusiM
  • I dunno, I'm not hearing it...better than I could do, but it sounds like he's really struggling with it. I can barely hear him at certain parts.

Oh come on, there's no struggling on the last few notes, you only have to look at his face to see that - in fact it all looks pretty efortless.

Oh fucking yes, you're so right, that was THE best live version of Hunger Strike! Totally nailed ALL of the high notes. I don't care if he could go slightly higher in the past, he had far less control over his voice live back then - so it might have been high, but it didn't necessarily sound good.
  • The argentina 07 shows are f-ing amazing. They should release that as a DVD.
bombs, dropping down, please forgive our hometown
  • He looks a lot like Eddie with that hair cut.

Honestly that was shit, listen to the original and listen to that. Chris has changed the way he sings because his voice doesn't have the power, he seems to dull each word he sings. I've heard the odd recent recording of Like A Dog and thought it was badass and have been looking for a recording of this song, but that was just dissapointing.

Um did you even listen to the end? If you didn't hear the power in his voice on those high notes your ears aren't working properly.

And do please tell us about this song 'Like A Dog'!
  • Definitely better than a lot of stuff he's done recently!
