The first single from NIN's new album Year Zero was premiered on the radio today.

It's a good song, but I think I like My Violent Heart better.

Even though "With Teeth" came out almost 2 years ago, it seems like he is releasing a new album quite quickly!

    Can i have it?
  • I'm not usually one to give a lot of praise but these first two songs are scary good. If the rest of this album is this good then this will easily be the best release of 07.

i heard both on the NIN myspace page and I think both are at least better than most, if not all of the With Teeth songs. I think I'm liking My Violent Heart a little more right now, at least when it kicks in.

  • Just listened to it on myspace, another cool song. Sounds like the new album is gonna be damn good! According to nme.com the album will be released 11 days earlier in the UK than the US, weird.

  • lol if Survivalism is the single, that album isn't gonna sell that well...I can see that already. I don't think these songs suck, but they're certainly not friendly to radio nor long-time Nailz fans who are begging for Broken 2.

I don't really care what the album sounds like anyways....as long as they start touring again soon. The live show will be killer regardless.

Agreed. Any serious NIN will hear that both songs have qualities that are familiar yet at the same time show that, just like every other NIN record, the band has evolved. This record will sell. By the shedload. I'm interested to see how the album packaging works, trent has already showed that he is aiming to do something new because the booklet idea has 'become a tired cliche', what he did with With Teeth was an original and engaging concept which he said was the beginning of his exploration of how to physicaly deliver an album so it will be interesting to see how he approaches this this time round.

Like he cares. He does what he does and we can take it or leave it. There's some interesting shit going on right now. I like Survivalism btw.

Very wicked and cool stuff. The picture of "the Presence" from the noise at the end of "My Violent Heart" is just creepy as hell.

I know he doesn't really care. He makes his money through touring.

I'm just saying it's not gonna sell that well if those are the singles...as in worse than Fragile and With Teeth.

Yes, the album will be very high when it debuts and then drop off like crazy. That's what happens with bands like NIN and Pearl Jam. They have a rabid fan base, but they don't pick up too many new fans with their new stuff.

And I wouldn't say the band evolves...Reznor dictates the direction of the band. He evolves, not the band.

If Survivalism or My Violent Heart become the singles, I wouldn't expect this album to sell much more than 1/2 million copies maybe less. That's about what With Teeth sold from what I've read.

I will reserve judgement, I mean TOOL's 10,000 Days was proof of such unpredictability.
They do evolve, undoubtably Reznor runs the show however each incarnation of the band helps it evolve as a musical entity, moreso now as Reznor has talked of the increasingly collaborative nature of the band and of how he 'lets the band member run with ideas beacuse I have faith in them as musicians and artists.'

You have to use spectrograph software, which i'm not very experienced with, and at the very end with the white noise, the spectrograph looks like the presence, twice.

I still think input from the band members is minimal. Take a look at Reznor's latest comment on his website:

"Is it possible I am actually finished writing and recording a new nine inch nails record? Apparently so."

I'm not saying the band members don't contribute, but I don't think it has anything to do with NIN evolution. NIN is Trent Reznor with a backing band for the purpose of live shows. It's not like Pearl Jam or Tool.

I understand what you're saying and I wholeheartedly agree that it's not like PJ or TOOl however that doesn't mean the band don't play a part, I never said their part was a large one. The only thing I am disputing is your comment that the band does not evolve, they do, and the majority of that is down to Reznor but to say the band members have no effect is, I believe, misinformed.

Take out the "opal" website...it has nothing to do with the game.

The exercise that is coming about from the year zero disc is some of the most fascinating shit I've been apart of. It's pretty fucked up.

I saw that too. According to the spiral forums, Survivalism was played tonight in Barcelona. I'm very excited about seeing them now. It seems Trent is changing up the setlists a lot and playing songs he hasn't played for a long time.

    It's going to kick ass!
