Anyone else do a Pearl Jam "Black Out" before a tour?

I usually do a one or two week spurt with no PJ leading up to a tour, just makes the feeling that much better hearing a song for the first time in a while live.

Anyone else?

I will only listen to PJ for the next 2.5 months...
    Conversations getting dull
There's a constant ringing in my ears
Sense of humor's void and numb
    And I'm bored to tears.......
  • i don't think it's too uncommon.
i've been on a mostly no-PJ blackout for the better portion of a year now.

Listen to a few Lost Dogs songs every once and a while, and played an improv and Patriot a few times, but not much else.

If i am listening to PJ going in to a tour, i do stop before the shows. However with my buddy\buddies in our hotel rooms before the shows themselves, we binge heavy on all PJ. Call it a ritual. Get ourselves psyched.

    :D
If I was to smile and I held out my hand
If I opened it now would you not understand?

I tend to listen to live shows more than albums.

Here at work I listen to 2-3 shows a day... I'm 1/2 way through the 2003 tour right now...

Anyway I decided that on June 1st I will listen to All the studio albums, lost dogs, into the wild and all other b-sides / xmas singles... it's my PJ marathon and then after that I'm done for the month until the day of the shows when I will most likely fire up some PJ for the drive to the concerts.

I do a PJ "brown out". I only listen to the official boots in the "brown" packages before a tour.
mmmmm, it does go well with the chicken.....delicious again peter

I'm kina the opposite. I put PJ down in between tours/ shows and pick them back up as a show approaches.

I will be immersed until then.... so no change really

This is what I do before a tour where I am seeing a few shows:

First off. I don't listen to any PJ or PJ affiliated songs(solo albums, side-projects, etc.) for 24 hours before a show I am going to.

Then I take that 24 hours and count backwards in days by the number of albums released by the band(studio, b-sides, LOTL, Benaroya, etc., not counting live boots obviously). Then I listen to 1 album a day leading up to the first show of that tour I am going to see. That way, I have every album pretty fresh in my head.

    That's my ritual.
I shit and I stink. I'm real, join the club.

A friend, he called, I didn't mention a thing. The last thing he said was, "Be sound". Sound. I contemplated an awful thing, I hate to admit. I just thought those would be such appropriate last words. But I'm still here.

I don't think I've listened to Pearl Jam in quite a while.. I mean, there is other music out there.

Yeah, I usually go a few weeks before a show until the week of the show without listening to them. The one exception being if they are touring in support of a new album - then I'll listen to that while not listening to anything else for awhile.

Then the week of the show, I'll break out my fav boots and listen to No Code and Yield on repeat to get ready.

Sounds like some pretty elaborate rituals! I "build momentum" getting closer to the tour. I'm already thinking about starting to listen to all the albums again just for the hell of it, and then I'll move onto boots at some point. In the days leading up to the shows, I'm prone to putting DTE on repeat in my car, and singing along to that at the top of my lungs with the sunroof open! :) Mostly just so I can do the scream at the start! LOL

The only time I really get burn out after all of that is immediately after the final show I go to. Then it's time to listen to something else finally. Driving away from the venue and listening to them again just makes you kinda sad that it's over.
    I won't change direction, and I won't change my mind - E.V.

  • I used to cut myself off about a month before the show so everything was fresh, but I'm not as disciplined these days. I'll try to keep the PJ to a minimum until the show (Mansfield, in my case), I'd hate to overplay a song and then hear it at the show.

On top of that, the friend I usually take with me likes to listen on the way to the show, so it would be tough to go back to the way I used to do it.

Pretty much nothing but PJ until late May/early June; then my "blackout" begins.
And before his first step... He's off again...

I do the opposite. During Pearl Jam season(from the time I order my tickets to the final show I see that tour) I listen to pretty much nothing but live Pearl Jam boots.

I have already started watching all the dvd's. I put a chairs in front of me and in back of me, like I was at the show, and practice my hot dance moves.

  • i had been in an "off" season until i heard about the east coast tour - then the days before fan club tix went on sale it was nothing but our boys. I even almost didn't go out last friday night cause i was home listening to them. I was off it for a few days but i'm back on the juice as of tonight. so it was what, 4 days, no pj...it'll be like that until the first MSG show. DAMN. IS IT JUNE YET?

people are already sick of hearing me talk about it.

I'm actually looking forward to the 3 month build up!

nah i had been on a PJ hiatus and as soon as I started listening to boots again they announced the tour so they are back yet again in heavy, heavy rotation

I black out the day of the show for sure. But usually a couple days before. It makes the show so much better. (If that is possible.)

I look at the days leading up to a concert like I'm cramming for a big test. I listen to everything by PJ all the time.
