my brother (who is living in toronto since 1995) sent me a cd of tragically hip's Day For Night album...i seen a lot of threads about the band but didn't care to read them because i didn't know them. but upon hearing them the 1st time ever, i was instantly awed....

greasy jungle
yawning or snarling
nautical disaster

is this their best album? what really are their best songs. are they worth listening today?

In my opinion as a long time Hip fan, that is arguably their best album. It is certainly one of my favourite albums of all time. That era for the band was its best. You should get "Fully Completely" and "Trouble at the Henhouse" too. To me those 3 albums are possibly 3 of the best albums made in the 1990's. After that, there's plenty of other material of theirs that is worth exploring, but those 3 are the absolute best.

Day for Night is my favourite with Trouble at the Henhouse a close second.

Best song is VERY debatable, but many Canadians would say "Wheat Kings"

My first listen to The Hip was Road Apples.. Some will say it's not their greatest work, but I LOVE it.. I moved on to their entire collection after that and have to agree with the above posters.. Day For Night, Fully Completely and Trouble At The Henhouse are awesome.

    Road Apples
    Fully Completely
    Day For Night
    Trouble in the Henhouse

That was quite the run of albums from the late 80s to the mid 90s. All of them are worth checking out. I don't think I could even combine songs from their last 4 or 5 albums into one album that matches any of the above, unfortunately. They are still good live, though. One of the best concerts I've ever seen was The Hip playing a free show at The Forks in Winnipeg for 80,000 people.
“Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It’s hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It’s round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you’ve got about a hundred years here. There’s only one rule that I know of, babies — ‘God damn it, you’ve got to be kind.’” - Kurt Vonnegut

you would be wrong in thinking that. it would be very easy to do so.

I'm a huge Road Apples fan myself, but I do like Fully Completely and Trouble at the Henhouse. I'm also a big fan of their In Between Evolution album, probably their best of the past few releases. Gord is also insane in concert. I've never seen a human sweat so much in my life.

I'm not a huge Hip fan...i've seen them live a couple of times (always good), i've got a few of their albums, but nothing from the last 6-7 years.

From the stuff i've heard, Day for Night is clearly their best.

The thing is, even a mediocre Hip song is still better than 99% of the crap that passes for music these days. 23 years into their career and they have yet to release a crappy album in my opinion. Some albums are better than others of course, which is the curse of longevity. You're not gonna hit it out of the park every single time. But these guys are brilliant songwriters, and while their output since 2000 has been inconsistent, they never fail to surprise me. There are always certain songs on each album that absolutely blow my mind. A few examples from recent Hip albums:

    Tiger the Lion
    Lake Fever
    Toronto #4
    The Bear
    The Darkest One
It's a Good Life if You Don't Weaken
    Leave
    The Dire Wolf
    The Dark Canuck
Gus: The Polar Bear from Central Park
It Can't Be Nashville Every Night
    Mean Streak
    The Heart of the Melt
    Are We Family
    Goodnight Josephine
    Yer Not the Ocean
The Lonely End of the Rink
    Luv(sic)
    The Kids Don't Get It
    The Drop-Off
    Family Band

If you're never heard the Hip before, I always tell people to check out their double-disc greatest hits compilation "Yer Favourites". If you like what you hear, then dipping into the rest of their cataloge will be a treat. It's already been mentioned, but "Day for Night" is widely considered to be their masterpiece. After that I'd check out:

    Phantom Power (masterpiece #2)
    Trouble at the Henhouse
World Container (their latest album, and one of the best things they've ever done)
    Fully Completely

    Happy listening!
"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."

what a song. the ending is incredible the way he delivers the lyrics

    Goodnight Josephine Lyrics

I remember a girl on her cellphone
    surrounded by her friends
    eyes flickering she's trying
to smother a smile in her hands
    Is it someone for us
    someone more worry-free
    someone who can say'
"leave the worrying about him to me Josephine"?

I remember you there in the last rays
    of light at diplomacy's end
    eyes flickering you're crying,
"but , isnt this when the crimes begin?"
when the people you want to don't
    the people who do
    you don't believe
    you Josephine?

I remember you there at the table
surrounded by all the days plans
    eyes flickering you're trying
to let a coffee cup warm your hands
    maybe we're born lost
    born to persevere
honey I'd walk into your painting
    until I'd reappeared
    a speck of comet-tail dust
    a blue-green northern light
    flickering just
    in your eyes' deepest ravines
    goodnight goodnight Josephine

They are a great band. I'd say all there albums are definate purchases, older fans will tell you the earlier albums are best, but personally I don't think there is any drop off in quality at all. Incidently 'Day for Night' isn't even in my top 5 Hip albums, your going to have alot of fun discovering this band, I know I did 2 years ago. :)
  • I'm listening to this right now. easily their best. the Fully Completely reissue reignited my love of this band.

Great lyrics... great music... without question one of the most underappreciated bands of all time.

    Best albums? For me:

    1. Fully Completely
    2. Road Apples
    3. Up to Here

no Day For Night in your top 3? I bought the FC reissue, but have yet to watch Heksenketel. Not sure why. I've been wanting to see it for years, I finally get it, and it sits there.

Highway Girl (Double Suicide Live) is arguably the best live song ever performed/recorded by anyone, anywhere, ever.

I absolutely think that Day for Night is their best album - it's incredible - and I cannot WAIT for it to be reissued on vinyl!! I had the original but the seller I got it from was dishonest about the grading, so I resold it (at a loss), which was a huge bummer, and I am now waiting for the reissue. They seem to be doing their reissues in order - Day for Night is next!! I'm expecting it next year. :)

Excellent album for sure. Sometimes when I play Nautical Disaster, I play it again right away.

Just rocked out to Up to Here too much to not give it the credit I owe it.
