I must say I usually rolled my eyes when hearing the mellow sound that is coldplay. However nearing my 30's omg, I find my favorite song on the last Jay Z album to be hands down beach chair featuring Chris Martin and now he pops up on the new Kanye West album with a fantastic song as well. Just looking to get some opinions on the best place to start for this band, the reviews on amazon tend to lean towards rush to the head album. But you can only listen to 30 second snippets of songs, not really enough for me to get a feel for the songs. Also what about Radiohead? I remember their song creep from the early 90's but thats about it, judging from reviews ok computer seems like the logical first step for an intro to this band.
Seems the more you make
equals the loneliness you get

You know how i know you're gay?.... You like Coldplay.
If you havent seen 40 year old virgin you might find that quite insulting, lol.

Not a fan of Coldplay (apart from that song Shiver) but if you buy The Bends and OK Computer by Radiohead then you'll be going in the right direction.
    :)

Buy the Bends before you buy OK Computer. If you must listen to Coldplay, get A Rush of Blood to the Head. The one before was ok, but boring in the long run. The one after was just plain crap because they tried to rehash the 2nd and failed miserably.

  • Never has a band with so much potential just plain flushed it down the toilet.

I saw just Chris Martin support Miles Hunt from the wonderstuff at ronnie Scotts way back in 99 or 2000 and he was excellent. cut forward a few months and the first few singles and ep's were again fantastic. get to the release of Parachutes and Yellow, not much cop at all.

Saw them play all of parachutes acoustically at Ronnie Scotts hoping I'd like the album more, It didnt happen. 2nd album came Meh! 3rd album Meh Meh Meh! Rap collaborations...... oh do fuck off.

he's on the kanye west album? i can't figure that one out :)

i saw the editors last night. i couldn't help thinking at a few moments that "this is what coldplay should be." they're just too mellow for me. rush of blood to the head is good, but the next album sounds almost identical and their first is boring.

what annoys me more is people who use it as an adjective. coldplay isn't my thing, but 1) they're not bad and 2) dismissing a band as "going coldplay" proves nothing. there is nothing new or original about coldplay. to diss a band for having a melodic but mellow song with an anthemic chorus dismisses 75% of rock music.
  • They have a few good songs per album, but those always get put out as singles.

The cool thing with coldplay is that you can buy any of their albums, they all sound the same.
As for radiohead I'd go ok computer + kid a since they don't cost much these days.
  • Oh yeah, get Pablo Honey, The Bends, OK Computer. Only a combined few bad songs. And download Maquiladora. You can get alotta their stuff at funkytorrents(singles and the like)
  • start with the bends for sure from radiohead and then get everything else from them. give up your facination with coldplay unless you need something to sleep to. boring, boring and boring also dull very dull, but i can lay down and listen to them and sleep pretty comfortably.:)
    Oh dear dad
    Can you see me now
    I am myself
    Like you somehow
    I'll ride the wave
    Where it takes me
    I'll hold the pain
    Release me

    Parachutes All The Way
  • Usually the people who think every coldplay album sounds the same has either listened to the albums only one time or only heard singles....each album is quite different than one another in my opinion. (I admit, Speed of sound is very similar to Clocks...but that's the only big similarity that I see) No they didn't change their style completely, but the 3 albums are kind of a trilogy. They're changing their style for their next album.
On this board, it's just popular to hate coldplay, just like it's popular to hate creed.
  • Well I do hate Creed, but I like Coldplay. I think A Rush of Blood to the Head is there only good album, but there are good songs on both Parachutes and X & Y.

As for Radiohead...It's all good brother!!!

I personally can't recommend you a coldplay album because I hate them but as far as Radiohead go, I'd rank the albums like this -

    Kid A
    OK Computer
    Amnesiac
    Hail to the thief
    The Bends
    Pablo Honey

sorry, fans of their more guitar orientated stuff, I just think that the albums they really became a special band with were the more experimental ones.

  • i saw the editors last night.

Pardon my anal-ity but it's just Editors. And they're fantastic live.

  • Coldplay--they only have 3, so I would get all 3 and start with Parachutes. If you only want to try one, start with Rush of Blood to the Head. Amazing album beginning to end. Clocks and The Scientist are simply incredible pieces of music. X&Y was a bit disappointing, but the 2nd album was nearly impossible to follow.

Radiohead--start with The Bends or OK Computer. Hail to the Thief is awesome as well. Kid A and Amnesiac are difficult to get into and you probably wont like them right away, but they'll hit you at some point.

not so. i used to own all 3 albums and listened to x&y dozens of times before i realized it was just too repetitive for me. rush of blood was a pretty great album, but parachutes was just too mellow for me. they've perfected that slow anthemic jam u2 refined. sure there are slight tweaks from album to album, but it's not exactly a dramatic evolution.
  • I never said coldplay was a dramatic evolution...I just think they are really good musicians who deserve some more respect than people on this board tend to give them. It's ok for a mellow song to be good. If Pearl Jam performs a mellow song it's incredible but if coldplay has a mellow song it's boring? I don't get it. I agree with the other poster...the song "scientist" is unbelievable. Same with warning sign...especially the ending.

i'll agree with that. i don't think they're a bad band, they just bore me. i'd rather listen to u2. though i do think it's less a double standard than you indicate. pearl jam has rockers and slow acoustic numbers and everything between. coldplay isn't bad, but 90% of their songs are the same anthemic midtempo song. the rest are those slow burners that do into the dramatic finish (everything's not lost, amsterdam). like i said, nothing wrong with it, just doesn't make me feel compelled to own their albums. i'd rather wait for the inevitable 'best of' with all the songs i like.

Coldplay has some decent songs... I'd love to hear the Chris Martin w/Jay Z or Kanye songs... but I'm not going to buy the albums!
