People usually think they are going to be great since they were the first 'grunge' band. Their music is average, not great, but I think it's more important to listen to it to see how the music progressed from Green River to Mudhoney and from Green River to MLB to Pearl Jam. Also, listen for the elements that would become staples in the later bands.
Their cover of Queen Bitch is amazing and Swallow My Pride and Come On Down are classics but I've always felt that some of their other music is quite weak. I do like them though but I think the members went on to better things. I prefer Mother Love Bone by miles.
"I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"
TOTALLY dig Green River, and yeah, you have to be in a mood to listen to them. LOVE Swallow My Pride. Heck, I was even a anxious to see, since Mudhoney opened up for them in 2005, that they were going to throw a Green River song, but alas, no.
I do have all their albums though and I like it!:)

The first time I heard them was on the CD insert that came with Charles Peterson's book "The Screaming Life". Green River's "Ain't Nothing to Do" is the first song on there. As I was reading this thread, I tried to find the song on my hard drive and couldnt so I ripped the disc. The interesting thing was that the disc shows up as one 26 min. track. It actually has 9 songs by Green River, Mudhoney, Nirvana, Tad, Soundgarden, Screaming Trees, Beat Happening, Seaweed, and Fastbacks. Old school stuff that predates the whole Nevermind/Ten Era.
I have heard some other songs of Green River and they remind me a lot of Mudhoney, but I think its that way for me just because Mark Arm has such a distinctive voice. XM Radio has a show every Friday afternoon called Faded Flannel and they play all stuff from "The Heyday of the Northwest Music Scene". If it isnt a song I know, I cant tell the differnce between Green River and Mudhoney, but then again I'm far from an expert on their music.
mother love bone are amazing
green river have nothing on them
i would say mother love bone were the second greatest seatle band ever (pearl jam being the greatest)

some people say its a shame andrew wood died so early but without him dieing there would be no pearl jam!!!!

- brain of c
Green River is basically a punk band with other things thrown in there..
The talent was much much higher in Mother Love Bone though (I say that loving both bands' work).
and yes their Queen Bitch cover is one of the best things they did, but i love all the rest of it too.
