What an amazing song! Trent Reznor is a genius!!

"Hurt"

I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything

What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of shit
Upon my liar's chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stains of time
The feelings disappear
You are someone else
I am still right here

What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end

You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

I prefer it when Johnny Cash sings it.

Hmm, I love Cash's version, but there's something about the way Trent delivers it that just gives me the chills. It's the really calm verses and then the really impassioned chorus that do it for me. Either way, it's a fucking brilliant song.

Are you going to see them at l'Ancienne Belgique?
  • Just thought I'd pop by and as a newly converted fan, say 'yes yes, nod nod' to the original poster. Cash's version of Hurt made me listen harder to NIN. Both versions of this song are beautiful. NIN's is moody and dark, Cash's is sad and melancholy.

I looove this song... have loved it for years....

best ending to any song, ever..... just crank it, and let those last three chords blow your speakers.... :D:D:D

cash's version is 'meh', at best.... i appreciate that he respected Trent enough to cover it, but seriously... snoozefest.

I like both, but prefer the original. There's not many single moments of 90s music better than the part when Trent comes in with 'You could have it all...'.

Breathtaking - even the video is rediculous.
  • The Cash version is ridiculously great.

The video for Cash's version is fantastic as well. It fits the song perfectly.
