So, after having time to digest it.....how do you like Evil Urges by My Morning Jacket?

I still dont have it and am weighing buying it or the Tennessee Fire album. So far I have Z, Okonokos, and It Still Moves and it is time for another MMJ album.

So, your thoughts on EU.....or any MMJ album for that matter.
I used to do drugs. I still do, but I used to, too.

  • ahh, Evil Urges is kind of tough for me to describe. It's a great album, I love it, but it is true that there's a couple wildcards on it, most notably Highly Suspicious, that some people absolutely hate. Personally, I don't hate or love that song. Overall, though, it's a great album and continues the development of MMJ's sound. If you're still in the process of getting into them, though, I would probably recommend At Dawn. It's more in the vein of It Still Moves, with some amazing vocals, touching songs, and some sick jams that really showcase the guys' musical talent. All of that being said, you can't really go wrong with any of their albums, I love all of them, so I would just pick one, enjoy it, and know that you have more to look forwards to.

it is a phenominal album. it took me a bunch of listened to fully "get" it, but once i did, its fucking amazing. its not their best album, but its definitely great. i would get it before the tennessee fire definitely.
  • i'd get Tennessee Fire. its my personal favorite of theirs, but took me awhile to like.

Urges has two or three good songs, but has some really really shitty songs too. not one of their best IMO.

but i'd slap my grandma to see them live again.
  • 3 amazing songs. 1 great song. The rest sucks. It definitely can't touch their two before it.

Definitely different, but changing things up is what makes a great band. Almost a little Prince like in parts. So many bands don't take risks anymore so you have to give them credit. Initially I had mixed feelings, but now I really like it. Touch me i'm going to scream part II is sweet!

I love it. It was a little weird at first, but pleasantly weird. It didn't take too many listens before I was hooked. It feels like Jim and the band are paying an homage to the whole range of their influences - a lot of it is like super sounds of the 70's - and some songs might sound cheeseball at first, but if you like Z, then I think you'll appreciate what they are doing. Hard to pick favorites - the whole album is worth listening to over and over again.

But you can't go wrong with The Tennesse Fire either... just know that it's a very different album. It's subdued, and sometimes very sad. Whereas Evil Urges is very upbeat and generally positive.

I love that about MMJ... that each album has it own vibe.

So maybe which one you buy depends on what you're in the mood for?

You need to get At Dawn right now.

Forget Evil Urges, forget Tennessee Fire.

    Get on At Dawn ASAP.
  • I agree with RedMosquito10, you need to pick up At Dawn. Tennessee Fire is good, but has a new-band-trying-to-get-their-feel quality to it, almost like a demo tape. Jim murmurs and wails nervously all over the place and it can take a few listens to let the songs sink in. At Dawn is their brilliant follow up where My Morning Jacket hit their stride briming with confidence. It's on At Dawn where Jim really hones his trademark wail, with soaring vocals, and crazy jams.

Since Evil Urges is the greatest departure from the MMJ sound (though no less quality) I would recommend getting the first two records (At Dawn, Tenn Fire) before easing into Evil Urges.

  • Evil Urges is amazing. I love songs like Highly Suspicious and Touch Me Part II.
Smokin' From Shootin' is awesome aswell. But really, you should invest in At Dawn, once you hear Phone Went West and Strangulation! you'll realise.
  • Get Evil Urges... then At Dawn.

Evil Urges is incredible imo :)
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.

Listen 1 i was like WTF.
Listen 2 I was like hmm
Listen 3 I was like YEEEAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First listen of Librarian on the vinyl I was like O O O O.

If you like the progression from It Still Moves>Z, get EU. It's the logical next step.

If you get it, even if you don't do vinyl, get it on vinyl. It comes with the cd.
  • At Dawn is MMJ's perfect album. Evil Urges, while great in its own right, is probably the furthest from perfect album they've made thus far. It probably boils down to whether you prefer their experimental and poppier songs, or their southern stuff. Tennessee Fire is probably the album I listen to least, but I Will Be There When You Die is incredible.

Hm. Like it. Don't love it. But love a lot of MMJ's prior releases.

Okonokos is probably the best live album ever, btw. I'm just sayin'.....

Oh, lots of "Tennessee Fire" love here.

"It Still Moves" is their best studio album.

"Okonokos" is their best over all album.

I love Evil Urges honestly, it took a while to get into the album but I absolutely love it. Same with Tennessee Fire. I think I prefer Tennessee Fire over At Dawn slightly which is odd to most people. In my opinion you can't go wrong with any of their stuff, but looking at what you've got so far, go for At Dawn. It has half of what It Still Moves has and half of what Tennessee Fire has. You'll want Tennessee Fire soon enough. Then relisten to Z then get Evil Urges :)
