First Visit to Seattle

I'm heading to Seattle for the first time tomorrow. Does anyone have any recommendations for Pearl Jam/Grunge must-visit's in Seattle? Maybe some cool filming locations from Singles. Any help would be appreciated. I'll even take non-PJ-related must-visit's if you have them!

So far my plans only consist of riding up the space needle in my flannel and doc martins, help!

I am not from Seattle, but have been there myself on visits...

    Crocodile Cafe
Emerald City Guitars, if you like guitars
A Mariners game but Baseball Season is over
Easy Street Records in West Seatlle, beer and food
    Pioneer Square, lots of bars
Union Lake, there is a restaurant across the water from the Marriot on with a deck outside that has great food, mostly seafood fare, can't remember the name
Mt Olympic National Park, beautiful but a few hours away
Take a ferry somewhere like Bainbridge or Bremerton

You can search all that out and find info...I am not expert but those are some suggestions.

Its been a number of years since I was in Seattle but these are places that I have great memories of:
Pike Place Market was amazing, vibrant and wonderful gifts.
The Soundgarden was a nightmare for us to find but when found it was worth it.
Hendrix's grave. But dont know if it will be the same as after Jimi's father died there was a (step) family feud about Jimi's grave and the last I heard/read was that they had started a legal battle to have his grave exhumed and his body moved to a private ground.Still worth a hunt out though.
Hendrix's memorial stone at Seattle Zoo,it was up by the Savana Plains,we were sitting on it and didnt even realise lol.
The Hendrix mural was on the wall above where the pawn shop used to be where his father bought him his first guitar. It was close to Puget sound area and close to Seattle Aquarium (think)?
Moes was an amazing club, bar, music venue in the university district (think)? We saw Red House Painters there.
Get a bus to Fremont area, its was full of thrift shops and street markets. We spent most of our time in the Triangle Bar,it was right on a street corner.Fab place, chilled atmosphere, great music, great staff.
Seattle Space Needle, oviously,a really nice landmark and area.
Go on the monorail,I loved it.
The Seattle local beer was Redhook.Delicious stuff, drink some (if of age for beer!).
Gas Works Park was great. If you can go at the weekend.Lots to see and do.
Oh I would love to go back to Seattle. We were there for a month and loved every day of it.
Appologise to any Seattlites if I have got areas/districts/venues wrong. No disrespect meant. It was 1994 when I was last there. But it was one of the most beautiful, vibrant, friendly cities I had ever been in,and I've travelled a lot.

Stay home! It's really fucking wet and cold right now!

Just kidding, what everyone else has mentioned is good. You can also go to Jimi Hendrix's grave out in Renton.

I would take in a show at one of the venues here...........

    I know Hell's Belle's (all-girl AC/DC tribute band) is at Neumo's tonight.

El Corazon (formerly Off Ramp) has http://www.elcorazonseattle.com/cgi-bin/showinfo.cgi

The bars in Fremont have some good bands playing. The Showbox (2 locations now) has some bands (never heard of them), but the shows are cheap.

Too bad the Croc closed down...............

The Nite Lite - a bar adjacent to (part of?) the Moore Hotel and Theater. Cameron Crowe did a GREAT print interview with Ed at this place (worth reading, if you can find it on the internet). IMHO, the Nite Lite is the epitome of a "dive bar" :D Plenty of hardcore drunks in this place!

The Red Hook Brewery in Woodinville. I always stay too long :D!

And, I agree about Freemont - cool area.

Here's my favorite part of the interview I just referenced... Ed is talking about his climbing during "Porch"...

"That climbing happened out of me saying 'Look this is how extreme I feel about this situation. This is how fucking intense I'm taking this moment.' You can't do that for long, because what they really want to see is, they want you to chop your fucking arm off, hold up your arm, wave it around spewing blood, and believe me, if you did that, the crowd would go fucking ballistic. You only get four good shows like that, though. Four good shows, and then you're just a torso and a head, trying to get one of your band mates to give you one last hurrah and chop your head off. Which they probably wouldn't do, which would really be hell. :D

    I agree! Very interesting.

I also recommend taking a tour of Safeco Field. What a gorgeous stadium!

Of course, the above has nothing to do with Pearl Jam. :)

By the way, eat breakfast at Lowell's at the Pike's Place Market. Too tasty!

If you rent a car you should head out towards Bellingham and find Casa Que Pasa(I think thats how you spell it) they have the BEST burrito in the world! Actually if you got a car you should go a little further to Vancouver, BC and find Camby St :) Not Pearl Jam related but they got stuff you cant find or do here. Bruce Lee and Brandon Lee are also in Seattle and the Arboreatum by the cemetary is BEAUTIFUL!

  • Just got back from my trip to Seattle; what an amazing city. It even snowed on our last night there! For an L.A. resident it was a very nice perk to see it snow in the city, but it was also a little scary to drive around on the icy streets. I just wanted to thank everyone who offered recommendations. I didn't get a chance to visit every recommendation in only three days, but the places I did hit were very cool.

I compiled a list of everyone's recommendations and added the addresses. Here it is for easy reference if anyone else is making the trip over to Seattle:
