  • Obviously the number of groupies they bagged. Extra points if they were all at the same time.

uniqueness of the sound, longevity & fans... like pearl jam

  • In my personal opinion, the influence of a band or a performer on other generations is what makes a group legendary, whether it be by new and creative sounds or by new business practices. For example, I find a band like Black Flag or Minor Threat to be legendary in that they really kept with the whole DIY mentality of selling themselves (along with a majority of other punk bands of that era). I think Sonic Youth is legendary for signing to a major label without compromising their sound as artists. Regardless of whether you like them or not, they have been a very influential band as far as their sound and ethics go.

Album sales are irrelevant in my opinion. Hootie and the Blowfish and the Spin Doctors sold a lot of albums and I don't think anyone is going to hoist the legendary flag for them.
