My GF is a fan - and we just bought floor ticket.

Is it a rough crowd? I'm getting old. :D

ps: if Tool can play "mid-sized markets" like Richmond, why can't PJ?

cool. i don't mind moshing, but... primus moshing, or light-hearted moshing. Tool seems pretty serious, so I could only imagine their crowd would have been hard core moshers. :)

When I saw tool last year, Maynard absolutely forbade the crowd from moshing. I dunno if he's still in that phase, but it stands to reason that he should be.

Lived in Richmond for 24 years. We never got the big acts very often. They arent going to play the Coliseum are they, I mean Tool seems much more Richmond's speed than PJ.

yeah - I'm looking forward to the show! I'm not that familiar with more than maybe 3 of their popular songs - but I think it'll be a good experience. I'm a drummer - and this guy is on my list of top drummers, probably number 1 from the few songs I've been exposed to. So that alone will keep my interest strong.

Is there an opening act usually? It doesnt list one. Do they play long?

well if you are a drummer this guy will absolutly blow you away i thought i was watching a fucking martian or machine on the drums, and i only knew a couple of songs also but it didn't matter i was mesmerized by the whole show from begining to the end. they really don't play a bunch of songs like PJ but their songs are long i can only compare it to a PINK FLOYD TYPE OF SHOW ......

I'm going next Wednesday with a Buddy of mine who got tix through the Tool Fan Club. I'm also a "casual fan" and only know 3-4 of their songs, but am looking forward to the whole specticle. I did see Perfect Circle open for NIN @ 5 years ago, and they ROCKED, so I'm expecting a good show. I do fell a bit selfish though as I don't think I'll get as much out of it as a rabid fan, but hey, my money spends the same way as theirs.

perhaps this will change... i have heard of many people who arent really fans and then once they see them live, everything changes!

btw.. the last two shows also had no alcohol served... not sure if it was just here that happened or if its for all the shows....so that cut down on the obnoxiousness.

I think in the early 90's with undertow out there may have been a rougher crowd, but it has tamed down or become more reasonable (depending on your point of view) recently.

I saw them on their Lateralius tour and there was no pit.

As far as the crowd / pit goes, it really all depends on what they play.

I was up front for a show in 2001, and it was CRAZY. Not really a pit so much, but that whole crowd WAVE effect, which might be scary to some, since it gets incredibly hot, and you're practically lifted off the ground by the people surrounding you, and have little control of where you're being pushed... Also, they started off that show with THE GRUDGE, which had everyone goin nuts from the first second they started playing-- once they played the Disposition/Reflection/Triad part of the set, everyone chilled out a lot.

The second time on that same tour was at Continental, and we were the back part of the GA section. Way more chilled out back there.

I saw them twice since their last record came out... Once the venue had all seats (in NYC), and the other was at Continental, and I was pretty blackout for that one, but the crowd definitely seemed more mellow this time around. I say it definitely has to do with their choice of songs on this past tour, especially the new material, which takes longer to build, and has less parts that straight kick ass and make people flip out.

Whoever described it as an "experience" kind of like floyd had hit it pretty good. Although, they were better during the lateralus tour, and there was a lot more to "experience." For instance, if you've ever seen the "Schism" video, with the 2 aliens that become one at the end-- Those guys were hanging from their feet 25 feet above the stage, dangling, twirling around, swinging wildly back and forth for a few songs (Parabol and Parabola, I believe). They also came out and started doing that bugged out walk (on all fours with their heads bobbing) around the stage during Schism. They've also traded in all their video screens for a big screen on the stage, which is cool, but I liked watching all their crazy videos as the songs were playing better the other way. I dont' even know what the screen stage would look like from the floor, but it's pretty cool if you're above the stage looking down.

The sets this past tour were about an hour and a half, but they've done 2 hour sets. Like PJ, the openers are usually someone you'll really dig, or really hate. But they usually have an opener. I think the last ones were Isis and Mastodon, I've seen them with 2 Mike Patton Projects: Fantomas and Tomahawk. Both were pretty crazy, as you'd imagine.

Sorry for the book. ha ha. You just might want to stay back a good 30 rows if you want to avoid the crowd bein too crazy. Enjoy yourself, and I recommend listening to all their music before you go! Especially the new album-- not because it's my favorite, but at least you'll know a few of the songs they're playing. Actually, you can't go wrong with buying Aenima, Lateralus, and 10,000 Days before the show and listening. 95% of everything they play will be from these 3 albums.

    PEACE!

I saw them last fall and the pit looked uncomfortable to say the least.

Seriously, Tool is playing the Bi-lo Center in Greenville, SC June 5th, 30 mins from me (we got tickets and it's my 1st time!! :D) I don't see why Pearl Jam won't come back there. They sold out the Bi-lo Center in '98. They were also the 2nd act to ever play there so it would be neat to see them come back.

yea but the last two nights were in san diego and the crowd was fine..... you always gotta be careful when seeing an intense band like tool, you just never know what people are gonna do.

I saw them in Manchester, NH last year. I was right at the front on the floor and could only tolerate it for half of the show. A lot of pushing and shoving and crowd waves. When I moved back to around the middle of the floor a huge mosh pit broke out. Security were pretty anal about breaking them up. Having those distractions kind of took away from the show. I'm going to try and see them when they play Portland in July.
