I know theere is a strong anti-Idol sentiment around here, but I was wondering. Does everyone feel that way about Chris Daughtry?

I've been listening to his cd lately and he is a really good singer. Even if I hated Idol (which I don't), I wouldn't hold it against a talented artist who made it big that way.

I was just wondering what the board though of him.

He may be a good singer, but his music blends in with the rest of the Hinder/Nickelback Top 40 garbage that's out there.

  • Lame. There are lots of good singers but very very few good artists - none of which are close to american idol.

  • i'm with the thread starter. yeah, he came from idol (and i must admit that i do like the show), but his music isn't that bad. i also see the comparisons to nickelback and the like, but i respect the guy for at least co-writing all the songs on his record and fronting a band (albeit named after him) instead of just making a solo career. and some of the songs on it aren't half bad. i think idol's gonna ruin that "home" song which i think is a pretty good song, but there's nothing wrong with liking the guy or his music. it's decent, not great, but listenable and even listenable is hard to come by on today's radio.

I don't know much about those artists, but I do know Daughtry's voice blows Chad Kroeger's out of the water.

Quite frankly, Freddy fucking Mercury could be singing for a band like Nickelback or any other generic shitfactory and the music would still be horrible.

Well, I don't know about that. Freddy was so awesome, would have given Hansen cred.

My thoughts on him are pretty irrelevant but since you've asked....

I did not watch American Idol so I've only seen/heard him sing only once when someone posted a link to something.

I thought his voice and vocal technique were really great and I was in that *grudging admittance* zone. I don't hold it against him that he came from American Idol like so many here do...snobbery. I haven't bought and don't plan on buying his album but the man's voice has character and he's a fine singer.

    Great luck to him.

I've heard a fewe of his songs and think he's a decent singer, but lacks any originality. I've heard his "voice" for years in other post-grunge bands and the like. His band doesn't make memorable riffs (at least to me) and Daughty seems way too full of himself, I mean look at the album cover...and the band name...and his outfit...

lmaoo i noticed that too and i was like "wait...wtf? i thought it was a band?"

but yeah, i think he has a good voice but i'm afraid american idol ruined him. his music...from what i've heard when my mom's got the radio on....seems very poppy which i never really thought was "him".

Have only heard the single which I think is kinda generic. Who knows? The guy can sing. Its just a matter of what he and his band do as far as writing good rock songs. Its like many here are saying. It takes more than singing talent to be a great artist.

Look at how many great bands have terrible singers. Kings of Leon... Caleb has a god awful voice (by classical standards) but they make great music. I love his voice personally, but he's by no means a great singer.. :p

a lot of the reason the album cover is like that is because the people who played on the record are not actually in the band. i guess record execs wanted him to release an album ASAP so it was recorded with studio musicians. he put together the actual band after releasing the album. hence, they are not on the cover.

as for the band name... well it does seem a little self-indulgent. but still. there's worse music out there. there's much much better, but it's not all that bad. people need to lighten up a little.

the guy has a good voice, writes good songs, and the cd is really good..i own it and admitt it, i dont care if this guy came from idol since he could have eventually made it without Idol, but hell he used the program to get where he is at, more than can be said for alot of people in their lives right now

uhhh yeah this guy can definatly sing his ass off. i don't think anyone will deny that. the problem is his music sucks. and i do love american idol but anybody that comes from that show is most likely gonna have shitty music. that's just how they're marketed. they are marketed for the casual top 40 radio listener who doesn't really get into music. they just like what they hear all the time because they never really learned to appreciate good music.......and i know it's opinion of what you think good music is, but i don't think anyone will deny that people who just listen to top 40 radio don't have much of an ear for quality

while i agree with most of this... i just think that someone that does have a good ear for quality music can still swing over to the mainstream if they like the music put out. if the person likes the music then listen to it... don't stand by and not enjoy it if someone will possibably make fun of you for abandoning non-mainstream ways if you get enjoyment from a few mainstream bands... or, even someone from american idol.

i bought the album a while back when it came out because i was curious to hear it and i thought he might actually might make a good album and not listen to the producer or whomever else might have been involved but, when i listened to it i soon figured out i was wrong. he made a generic rock album where as at first i couldn't make it all the way through it.

but, then i ended up listening to it again about a month later and realized not only could i get through the entire album but, i actually enjoyed it. at first i thought nickleback crap but, then when i listened to it a month later i just thought i really don't give a shit if it sounds a little like nickleback or if it's a mainstream record that won't even get any credibility from snobby music fan. i enjoyed it and that's all there is to it for me. and guess what, i'm a snobby muisc fan because i listened and was swayed by a lot of people on this board. haha. and i thank you for that... you people have opened up a world of music for me that i love. but, i guess sometime you gotta give in to an album if it's something you do enjoy even though some of your peers would give you shit for. (but, really, i think there's some people that lie about not liking some bands just because it's not cool to like them.)

good music is good music. but, integrity is a beautiful thing.

  • The show sucks, the guys music sucks. There are people who can sing in church choirs all over the world.
The standards have changed for rock music.
A rock genre is achieved through creativity. It takes a personal touch and originality. Bands/musicians payed their dues writing and expressing feelings and crafting art. Than they get out and sell their music and perform.
This show goes against everything music has stood for for the last 30 years.
And it shows in his lacking music.

Its a real shame that good music doesnt get any airplay for the younger generations. In the 70s thru the 90s you could always count on somehting to breakout and be cool.
I was listening to the radio the other day waiting for the cornell interview.
They played nickelback, daughtry, puddle of mudd. It was pretty funny. If I was a dj and I had to play that shit I would play the three in a row. Just to fuck with people. Its hard to tell the differance in their music, similiar key, chords, riffs, and a very safe song structure. These bands lack originality. They play it way to safe.
So take your shots at me, I like just about every genre of music to come along this has nothing to do with pj or pop music, because I like most of it except the stuff from thew last 4 years.

I agree, but the rise of "indie" music is a step in the right direction. Most of it isn't really my thing, but I can still appreciate its artistic merits.

uhh. yeah i see what you're saying but i think you completely missed my point. i was talking about people who only listen to top 40 radio. and yes these people do exist. i definatly enjoy some music occassionally that is very popular. i actually really like the latest my chemical romance cd, and i think coldplay has put out some good albums, although i think they are overrated in the music industry. anyway those are just a couple examples but yeah i wasn't saying if you listen to popular music you don't have an ear for good music, i'm just saying these people that ONLY listen to what is fed to them from the corporate music industry tend to not have much taste in quality music.

yes you are right, as bad as its been comparred to the history of rock, indie bands grind it out write their shit and gain a fanbase.

honestly as much as i hate the killers they have shit that is slieghtly differant and a good pop song.

    takes himself too seriously.

Idol is the reason he has a career. Yes it's a cheesy ass show.

If you are on top 40 radio, you are cheesy, feel happy that you have the money in the bank.

The audience is the reason it lacks credibility, it's elevator music. Top 40 is in everyones public restroom or supermarket etc. It's musical pablum produced and processed, not unlike baloney at the grocery store. It's music for people who don't really like music they just want some background sound.

Is he talented, absolutely, it's not wrong to like top 40 if you like it, that's fine, I hate to be snobbish about it, I just think it's funny he's now trying to shy away from Idol as if it were being in the Marching Band or Boy Scouts in High School. Hello... Mcfly...you did the show to get famous, now you are, and you are playing for the very people who made you famous...embrace them.
My Girlfriend said to me..."How many guitars do you need?" and I replied...."How many pairs of shoes do you need?" She got really quiet.
