I know PJ are big Sonic Youth fans and I have never heard them before. Can someone please tell me what is a must have album? I want to give this band a shot but I don't want to buy a CD that is not that good. Thanks for your help, Dan

    There are a lot of SY albums but Daydream Nation is the one that got the best reviews and is their most popular. For me it didn't age too well- my favorite is Goo. Also, very popular.

    I'm a big fan of Daydream nation, but if you are a new fan their last album Rather Ripped would be a good "starter" album it is very easy to get into

    Daydream Nation
    Dirty
    Experimental Jet Set, Trash, No Star

    are probably the 3 most accessible
    "Stunned by my own reflection, It's looking back, sees me too clearly and I swore I'd never go there again, Not unlike a friend that politely drags you down,down,down"

    When you see me on the street, yell out "FAVO!!!"

    I've been to alot of Pearl Jam shows;So fucking what.
  • If your just getting into them, I would suggest Goo, Dirty, Sonic Nurse or Rather Ripped. On a personal note my favorite album of theirs is A Thousand Leaves.

    I'd say

    Goo
    Dirty
    Washing Machine

    They've release an awful amount of crap. But those three albums have quality songs on em.
  • Dirty
  • daydream nation
    {if (work != 0) {
    work = work + 1;
    sleep = sleep - work * 10;}
    else if (work >= 0) {
    reality.equals(false);
    work = work +1;
    }system("pause");
    return 0;}
  • Dirty
    Daydream Nation

    But recently I've been listening to Sonic Nurse a shitload and that album is fucking fantastic.

    Dirty
    Goo

  • Sonic Nurse
    Daydream Nation
    Dirty
    Goo

    Those are probably the easiest to get into... not necessarily their best. They're all amazing albums.
  • Rather Ripped, their newest, is really good and very accessible.

    The correct answer is, of course, Sister. I am rather fond of Evol too though.
    "I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"

    Daydream Nation is my favorite Sonic Youth album. I think it's a masterpiece.

    Experimental Jet Set..
    Washing Machine
    Daydream Nation

    Those are my top faves. The earlier albums (evol, sister) have their moments but are generally too dissonant for me.

    Goo and Dirty are the two most commercial albums, imo, and they too have great moments.

    I'm envious that you're just getting into Sonic Youth... I'd love to hear some of those songs for the first time again.

    can't go wrong with either Goo or Dirty. Those were the ones I got into at first and I was instantly hooked. Afterwards you can work your way forwards with Washing Machine and backwards with Daydrean Nation. But I strongly recommend the 2 I mentioned.
  • Sister is fucking amazing too... I didn't start with it but still might do the job
